I live in CT and we've been hit by Hurricane Irene and a freak snowstorm at the end of October 2011. Our older hand crank flashlights have been getting a lot of use, and were slowly dying. I went to the Red Cross website first, because it anyone knew about disasters and emergencies it would be them. The Red Cross limits only one of these per order. I got it yesterday and took it home to try. My wife loved it. It was far better than we had imagined.

I was happy to see that I could by the same flashlight on Amazon, and not be limited by quantity. This is the best flashlight for emergencies. I bought a 2nd one for the house and 2 more for each of our cars. I would be surprised if you were disappointed in this flashlight.

Since I can't seem to give half star ratings I can only show 4 stars but feel this is DEFINATELY a 4 1/2 star product:-)
Any item that can bring attention to an emergency or lesss-than-desirable situation is awesome in my book. This particular flashlight is bright, feels good in the hand and even can stand on it's own; say on top of your car roof or even on the ground several meters to the rear of your car to warn other drives or quickly grab attention.

The fact that you NEVER have to worry about dead batteries is also another wonderful feature/function- just fold out the crank, wind it for approx. 1-2 minutes and you have power to last a long time - OR if cranking isn't your fancy, then plug in the provided cigarette lighter adaptor. My next test will be to see just how long it actually last on a single crank but i can say it lasted a full 30 minutes the other night when i was in my shed looking for some camping equipement. After much digging and re-shuffling I finally found what i was looking for and when propped up with the light shinning up at the ceiling of my shed (I have a 16' x 12' shed) there was MORE than enough light for me to see clearly.

Once i found the item, just for grins and giggles i turned on the flashing feature, set the light on the ground, walked out of me shed and down my 144ft driveway out to the street where i looked back toward the light/beacon; bright, easily seen and was quite clearly illuminating the front side of my shed and significant surrounding area.

The following day I gave thye light to my 8-year-old daughter and said, "can you wind this up for daddy.

This Eton Road Torq is a sturdy well-made flashlight/warning-light
for use in any emergency situation especially if your car breaks down
at night along the side of the road and you want to keep other cars
from running into it. Actually, you could even carry it with you if
you are walking along the road seeking help. The solid handcrank charger
will keep the beacon going for hours if need be. Also charges off car cigarette lighter.
I bought several, including for gifts.

When I received the Eton Road Torq I would have agreed with the rave reviews it gets. It seems sturdy, very bright, has a car charger in addition to hand crank - what more would one want? I placed it in my emergency kit in my car and it sat there for less than a year. The other day I needed the flashlight and got it out. I knew the battery would be dead initially. But, hey, that's why there's a crank function. But I cranked and cranked and the light will only flash on for a split second before going dark. So I thought I needed to charge it up for a long time using the car charger. I left it charging for at least 8 hours (the light works great plugged in) first using my car charger (still nothing) then using an adapter in my house. But still all it will do is flash on and go dark. If sitting around for a year means even the hand crank function won't work, what use is it as an emergency aid?

This is NOT rainproof. The owners manual under the heading "Warning" states: "Do not expose this appliance to rain or moisture. Protect from high humidity and rain." Living in the northwest where it rains a lot makes this unusable 25-30% of the time. Any place with high humidity would not be good for this either. Just a side note, it did not come with a carrying pouch.

This is a handy thing to have. Hasn't made it to my car yet, because have had to use it twice during a powere failure. Bright light and love the fact that I don't have to worry about keeping fresh batteries in it.

build quality - terrific, very solid feel
light - very bright
crank - again, very solid feel
weakness - the tripod legs are ok but could have been made less plastic/cheap feeling - to match the quality level of rest of the unit
