FYI - I bought this from my local REI and not Amazon

Pros:
- Solar charging
- USB charging
- TWO 5000mAh batteries that can be swapped out
- Each battery has a microUSB power IN and power OUT port
- 2.1A output
- Water resistant
- Shock resistant
- 'loops holes' on all four corners to strap/clip it on to stuff
- Unit itself has micro USB power in and standard USB female power out

Cons:
- Won't charge battery AND a device connected to the same battery via solar & USB power
- 16hrs to charge up 5000mAh battery via solar (not sure if there's any faster out there, though)
- Rubber flap/panel on unit that covers USB ports is a bit flimsy
- USB in/out ports on the batteries themselves are BOTH micro USB so the output requires an microUSB male - USB female adapter

You can charge a battery while it's inside the unit via Solar (in 16hrs of good light) OR by plugging it into a USB power adapter.
You can also charge the second battery from a USB power adapter even while it's NOT in the unit.
You can charge a device from the battery while it's in the unit.
You can also charge a device from the battery that is not in the unit too.
So you essentially have 10,000mAh of battery power with you.

I've read a lot of reviews where people had problems with the solar charging (like it doesn't do it) and unfortunately I fell victim to this problem as well. The USB charging was not a problem and that's what I used most of the time, but the one time I took it out on a hike, I found out the hard way that the solar charging wasn't happening for me.

Eton support was AWESOME and I've already begun processing a warranty exchange so I'm looking forward to getting it back into my hands again!

Thank you for taking the time to call our attention to this issue. We value feedback from our customers as it helps us to improve. A firmware bug was found in a small number of BoostSolar units that prevented the solar panel from charging the battery properly. This problem has since been resolved. If you would like to discuss your experience further, please contact us at cservice@etoncorp.com and reference "Amazon Review" in the subject line. Please note we are available to answer emails M-F, 8am-4:30pm PST.

the short version is that I bought this charger and it doesnt work. I sent it to Eton and they sent me a replacement and the replacement doesnt work. the solar panel does not charge the battery. Eton claims they have fixed this issue but they have not.

The longer version is that i shopped online for a day or two before picking this unit. its battery is twice the size of my phone and it is supposedly recharged after 30 hrs in the sun. so i thought it would work for my next trip. I noticed that the top review on amazon said that the solar panel did not charge the battery but that you could still use the battery to charge your phone, it would just have to be recharged from an outlet. I also noticed that Eton had commented on this review asking the reviewer to contact them about it. So being proactive and having decided that if this worked it was the best bang for my buck, I called Eton BEFORE i ordered the unit. Eton claimed this was a firmware bug that has been fixed. So, I order my unit 5/29/14. I get it and it doesn't work. The solar panel does not charge the battery. I contact Eton and after three weeks I get a new unit. This one also does not work. So I am at a loss. I emailed Eton yesterday about it and they havent responded, so Im going to return this to amazon and strongly suggest everyone keep shopping.

Just an Update for you guys, I was contacted by Eton who informed me " If might be better if you USB charge it first and then let it solar charge if you absolutely need it, like for emergencies. That's the way it was designed to be used"

so, good to know the solar panel was only designed to be used in emergencies. Unfortunately since it doesnt work at all, your not going to find it very useful in an emergency.

While this battery pack does charge off USB and keeps my iPad and iPhone charged while listening to music, the solar panel is completely useless and DOES NOT WORK AT ALL!!! After reading other customer reviews I found every other customer had similar problems. I also noticed a complete lack of detailed instructions. The instructions for this device was clearly not written by an engineer or technical writer as it does not include any information aside from basic usage information, this is a quick start guide not an instruction manual, and there is nothing available from Eton aside from a PDF copy of the same guide in the box. I would recommend. Sticking to a boost bloc, or consider another brand of solar powered charger. Rugged, yes. Nice design, yes, charges devices and has a lot of capacity, yes works as advertised, NO. I used the pack. And 1/4 charge was left. I had it in the car, I had it sitting by the window at work, I hung it on my backpack when walking in the city (securely attached), it was a sunny day. At the end of each test the battery indication still indicates 1/4 charge, even after 6-8 hours of bright sunlight, direct sunlight. Save your $$$, solar panel does not charge, PERIOD.
