The FR100 also tunes AM and FM radio stations, giving you breaking news and information during the power disruption. Of course, when it's not busy helping you out in an emergency the FR100 makes a great rechargeable clock radio that you can take anywhere -- without worrying about replacing the batteries.

Design and Controls
The FR100's attractive exterior houses an innovative fold-away AC plug that recharges the unit's built-in battery pack. The unit's blue backlit digital display shows radio frequency, time of day, alarm wake-up time, and a symbol for alarm activation. A powerful LED flashlight is integrated into the side of the radio, where you'll also find controls for volume level, tuning, and band selection.

The FR100 lets you choose from several alert modes that define what the radio does in the event of a power outage. You can set the unit to play the radio only, to turn on the light, or to turn on the light and radio at the same time. Of course, you can also set the FR100 to do nothing when power is cut.

Tuning and Bands
You can use the FR100's analog tuner to tune into your favorite local stations, In addition to a telescoping FM antenna, the unit contains an internal ferrite bar antenna for AM reception.

Connections and Power
The FR100 can be powered by the direct AC plug-in on the back of the device, or via the internal rechargeable battery. The battery must be charged for 72 hours to receive a full charge. An earphone socket can also serve as an auxiliary FM antenna.

Extras
In addition to a digital clock, the FR100 also features an alarm clock function.

What's in the Box
FR100 radio, auxiliary FM antenna, and user's manual.

3.0 out of 5 stars plug a problem, May 30, 2005
This review is from: Eton FR100 Blackout Buddy Radio (Silver) (Electronics)
Like the idea and the digital radio is a nice touch. My biggest problem is the plug. When the unit is plugged into a wall outlet the top of the unit covers part of the outlet above. This makes it impossible to use a 3 prong device and nearly impossible to plug in a 2 prong device. So you are dedicating an entire outlet to this one device. Seems they should have figured that one out.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this thing!, May 17, 2005
This review is from: Eton FR100 Blackout Buddy Radio (Silver) (Electronics)
I have 2 of these one for each floor of my house. When we lose the power there is no more fumbling for batteries for the flashlight or candles. As soon as the power goes out it is right there shining brightly from the outlet, ready to unplug and use as a flashlight! I'm buying them this year for father's day gifts!

3.0 out of 5 stars Battery Life? What battery life?, July 7, 2006

This review is from: Eton FR100 Blackout Buddy Radio (Silver) (Electronics)
Nice enough if on sale, but rather compromised overall:

#1: On full multi-day charges, the battery pack dies after a mere 45-55 minutes of standalone radio play. Has wired-in 4xAAA NiMH battery pack, could be changed out for better NiMHs if a techie person wanted, but....
#2: Rounded bottom means it has to lie flat on its back.
#3: Plug design, again.
#4: Switches a bit underbuilt/underdesigned.

Positives:
#1: Nice blue LCD display when plugged in (not if standalone). Like a nitelite.
#2: Combo of digital/rotary tuning, is precise.
#3: Sounds a bit thin but very clear/clean, pretty good reception.

Bottomline: keeper if $5, return it if paid asking retail $. Try try again.
