Color Name: Green Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I am writing this review as a head to head comparison of the three bluetooth speakers I have used right now: the Bose® SoundLink® Bluetooth Mobile Speaker II - Nylon, the Sony Bluetooth Wireless Speaker system, Black and the Eton Rugged Rukus All-Terrain Portable Solar Wireless Sound System (Green).

I will cover the physical aspects, ease of use, battery life, sound, and miscellaneous for each speaker.

Physically, the largest and heaviest is the Sony at almost 18 inches long and almost 5 pounds, not including the charger and carrying case; the Bose is next at 9 1/2 inches and almost 3 pounds, including the carrying cover but not the charger; lastly, the Rukus is a flat 6x6 1/2 inches weighing in at 1.2 pounds, no charger - it's solar.

Ease of use is about equal, power buttons, bluetooth sync, volume, etc. are all readily accessible and usable, no rocket science here. All shut down after a suitable period if not in use to conserve battery.

Battery life is a differentiator, the Sony is by far the longevity winner with at least 8 hours between charges, the Bose claims eight hours but I have felt lucky to get 4-6 hours, the Rukus will play for ever in direct sunlight and about 4-6 on charge (if only playing music not charging another device).

Every once in a while I get a product that makes me wonder, "How did I get along without this?" The Rugged Rukus is such a product.

Compact, attractively and functionally well-designed, and yes, rugged, the All-Terrain Portable Solar Wireless Sound System combines a couple of abilities that other devices I have do, but it does them better. The solar panel can recharge my smartphone and MP3 device, and the Bluetooth enabled sound system provides convenient, high-quality audio. To be clear, no system as portable as this one is going to have a large enough woofer for profoundly resonant bass, but at least the Rugged Rukus doesn't sound tinny, as my other two portable sound devices do.

And call me a troglodyte or luddite, but I had never used Bluetooth connectivity before, even though I have other Bluetooth enabled devices. The buttons and directions for the Rugged Rukus are so easy to understand and operate that for the first time, I actually found it simpler to use Bluetooth rather than mini-jack cabling. (Important note, though--the Rugged Rukus DOES allow you to plug in a non-Bluetooth-enabled device using a mini-jack portal). The convenience of the Bluetooth connection is exceptional, the sound is great...oh, and the battery lasts forever, and can be recharged in a couple of hours using the USB port, or in around 5 hours in direct sunlight using the solar panel.

Also, the device is water-resistant, with seals over the ports on the back to prevent water damage.

I've had an Eton Rukus for awhile that I picked up off a deal site for an incredible price. I've been very happy with it and was considering getting the solar powered version when I saw a "rugged" version was being made. As I use my speaker in places where damage is a strong possibility, I decided to wait until this little unit was released. I'm glad I did. So, where to begin:

First off, this is small. Coming from the original Rukus, I'm used to a speaker that has a decent footprint. I assumed this was similar (yeah, didn't read the product description very well) so when I received the Rugged I was surprised at the size of the box. The speaker is all of 6"x7"x2". Which in retrospect is actually a great thing. It fits in places the full size rukus wouldn't and it's much easier if your stowing it in a backpack for camping. It's also very light, weighing in at 1#3oz. Again, important if your backpacking.

I was a little disappointed when I opened it, as I assumed small size = small sound. Not so. This puts out sound on par with the full size Rukus, so plenty of volume for a campsite or backyard. If you're looking for something to fill a block pary, you'll be disappointed, but that's not what it's designed for. It's also very clean. Running off bluetooth with volume maxed there is very little distortion. The bass is a little weak, but for a system with 1.5" speaker it's acceptable.

Jumping to the solar panel, it's a standard 6x6" made up of 20 cells. Mine came almost fully charged, so I drained it then set it out starting at noon today (North Dakota, 80 degrees, no clouds). By 4:30pm it was fully charged, so slightly better than the listed 5 hours.
