Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Get the best of both worlds: A modern and high-performance field radio combined with classic styling, rugged construction, and military-style controls. The Etón S350DLS Deluxe AM/FM Shortwave Radio also features highly sensitive and selective analog tuner circuitry that ensures reliable, accurate tuning across the AM, FM, and shortwave bands. Other features include a large, full-range speaker for clear sound; a line-level output; separate bass, treble, and RF gain controls; and wide and narrow bandwidth filter controls. All this and more is contained in a case that's only 10.5 inches wide and weighs under 4 pounds. It's a great way to tune in to local and international news, music, and sports wherever you roam.

Design and Controls
One look at the S350DLS Deluxe and you'll think you've stepped back in time. However, the classic design conceals technology that's anything but retro. The large, integrated speaker offers full-range sound while the digital frequency readout displays accurate frequency stepping for all three bands. The bright LCD screen also displays clock and alarm info. Precise tuning is handled by a large tuning knob and a concentric, independent fine-tuning control knob. You also get variable RF gain control, a rotary volume control, independent bass and treble control, and a low-pass filter for shortwave and AM reception. Controls for clock and alarm functions are arrayed above the LCD display. A built-in telescopic antenna handles FM and shortwave reception, and there's a built-in ferrite bar antenna for AM.

Tuning and Bands
On the AM band, you'll get tuning between 530 and 1710 KHz, while FM tuning is available from 88 to 108 MHz. When tuning in shortwave, the S350DLS Deluxe offers continuous coverage from 3 to 28 MHz. This includes 13 international broadcast bands: 11, 13, 15, 16, 19, 22, 25, 31, 41, 49, 60, 75 and 90 meters. As mentioned, the S350DLS Deluxe is built with high-quality tuner circuitry that maximizes accuracy, while offering an AM/shortwave frequency lock system.

Connections and Power
The S350DLS Deluxe is equipped with a number of connectivity features, including a stereo line-level output and jacks for supplementary AM, FM and shortwave antennas -- great for boosting reception when you need it. A stereo headphone jack makes it easy to listen to the radio in full stereo without disturbing others. The unit can be powered with the included AC adapter, or via four "D" or four "AA" batteries.

Extras
The S350DLS Deluxe also allows you to set the radio's clock and alarm while the radio is still playing. A sleep timer will shut the radio off after a set interval, and last but not least, a convenient, strap-style carry handle makes it easy to take the S350DLS Deluxe along for any jaunt.

What's in the Box
S350DLS Deluxe radio, AC adapter, and user's manual.

Product Description

The S350 Deluxe blends the best of yesterday and today. With the look of a retro field radio sporting a rugged body and military-style controls ¿ the S350 Deluxe also features today's innovation for excellent AM/FM and Shortwave reception and a large, full-range speaker for clear sound. The external antenna input is ideal for enthusiasts. And features such as line-level output, separate bass, treble, and RF gain control, wide and narrow bandwidth filter controls, put you in the command seat for tuning in to local and international news, music and sports.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings After Four Years, September 22, 2006
This review is from: Eton S350DLS Deluxe AM/FM Shortwave Radio (Silver) (Electronics)
There is still a lot to love about the S350, big full sound, incredible FM reception, generally strong AM reception, good rugged looks. But the drift is a minor annoyance. Worse, two AM stations here in Los Angeles, 1150 and 980 (Dodgers baseball), get overcrowding, meaning two stations are playing at once, and no matter how narrow the filter I get this overcrowding. My 40-dollar GE Superradio III doesn't have this problem. But the GE doesn't have digital readout and I hate finding the sweet spot. So is there a big digital radio that doesn't have these flaws? I hear there is. Soon there will be a radio available called the Redsun 3000, designed by the same maker of the Grundig S350 (called the Tecsun BCL 2000 in China), which is supposed to blow away all the competition. Already the Redsun 2100 is said to be superior to the 350 but has ergonomic problems. As of 9-22-06, the Redsun 3000 is supposed to be only a few months away. Until the Redsun 3000 arrives, you may want to look at the $99 Sonido (made by Sangean). It boasts presets, digital tuning, and adds to its FM/AM a TV band, but has no shortwave.

Final Point: If you're buying a radio for your office and you use a computer, I suggest you get a good table radio with a remote control, like the Sangean WR-2 or its big brother the Sangean HDR-1, a high-definition radio. I point this out because any radio I've used within five feet of my computer suffers from horrible interference. Place the WR-2 ($159) or the HDR-1 ($199 after rebate) on a shelf or cabinet six feet away or so and use your remote to toggle between preset stations. In my experience these remote-control-operated radios are well suited for computer environments.

Update 12-31-06: I've been able to get rid of overcrowding on AM station 980 by turning down the AM/SW RF Gain knob. So I have to give a fifth star to the S350.

I got this radio when Amazon had a special for $35.00; although they noted that it was discontinued, they started to sell it again. Pro's - Great AM DX reception, even during the day. I am able to pick up WBZ in Boston very clear during the early afternoon hours. None of my other radios will even come close. Has a nice back-lit LCD than can stay on all the time. Uses either 4 D cell batteries or 4 AA batteries (nice idea). Light weight with plenty of buttons and knobs. Con's- Does not have preset function or search/scan. You have to use the tuning dial, which can go over or under the frequency; however, the frequency lock works great. A great radio for $35.00; however, I would not pay over $50.00 for it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Looks Great performance, December 10, 2006
This review is from: Eton S350DLS Deluxe AM/FM Shortwave Radio (Silver) (Electronics)
AM sensitivity is very good on this model. AM frequency lock is a little difficult to master, however it makes the set drift free. I own two of these. I use one as my bedside reciever and alarm clock. Great battery life and a good all round FM reciever. Shortwave is sensitive for the casual SW buff. Serious SW listeners may want to look at models that include sideband reception. This set does not have it.
