This is an English translation of the book; originally, it was published in French.

Rordorf argues that the Didache shows the first phase in prayer for the Eucharist.

George Blond investigates 1 Clement, and finds evidence that Clement regarded the Eucharist as "having replaced the various sacrifices of the Old Testament" (p 25). The temple, utterly destroyed by the time Clement wrote, had been the site of public worship by the Levitical priesthood.

"The priesthood (hierosune: 43, 2)...Under the old law...had...special functions" (p 30) and in the new era these functions were overtaken by overseer-presbyters.

Ignatius of Antioch in his letter Phil.4 insists "there is only one flesh of our Lord Jesus Christ and one cup to unite us in his blood" (p 52). Clearly, the early Christians believed "the Eucharist is the real flesh of Christ" (p 57).

In an essay on Irenaeus Hammary points out that Irenaeus stated that "'The Church has received this sacrifice from the apostles" (p 89).

Saxer explores the writings of Tertullian. He argues that Tertullian "introduced...Latin words and expressions for the Eucharist that were to become an integral part of the Church's traditional Eucharistic vocabulary" (p 133). Tertullian is also notable for his defense of the real presence in the Eucharist against Marcion's docetism.

By the time of Cyprian, the most important topic regarding the Eucharist was whether or not to admit the lapsi to the body of Christ. Cyprian wrote that the lapsi, more than even those who had stayed firm in the face of persecution, had need of the Eucharist so that they would not fail another time.

Jacquemont's essay on Origen argues that Origen believed 'that the word is the Bread and Body of Christ" (p 187).

Many interesting arguments.
