Editorial Reviews

Fr. Barron offers inspiring insights into the mystery of Christ's presence in our lives and the centrality of the Eucharist as an important part of that presence. So many believers do not understand the mystery of the Eucharist, which Vatican II said is the source and summit of the Christian life. This fresh look at the Eucharist brings to light its reality as sacred meal, the sacrifice necessary for communion with God and the real presence of Christ.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great DVD by one of the great Catholic teachers February 27, 2012
I really love everything that Robert Barron does. His books are very profound and insightful. His DVDs are wonderful. I used this DVD for a religious education program at my parish in Mississippi. I lent it to the parish where I previously served, where they also used it for religious ed. We are celebrating the year of the Eucharist in the Diocese of Jackson, so this DVD ties in perfectly. The study guide that accompanies it is a great addition.

Barron discusses the Eucharist as sacred meal, as sacrifice, and as the real presence of Christ. We broke our sessions into these three different topics. Even though I have two seminary degrees, it amazes me how Robert Barron adds so much to the knowledge and insights I already have. In discussing the Eucharist as a sacred meal, he talks about how from the very beginning Jesus was born in a manger in the stable, at the place where the animals eat, so from the very beginning he has been associated with a meal, with food. I never heard that connection before.

Father Robert Barron is one of the great teachers of our Catholic faith and of all Christianity in our country. He is a great spokesperson for our faith. We can learn a lot from his insights. And what I find so interesting about him is that he seems to attract both "traditional" Catholics and more liberal ones as well. That says a lot since our Church and our society seems to be divided into many different factions these days.

4.0 out of 5 stars Eucharist by Rev. Robert E. Barron July 18, 2012

A must for those who seek to realize the meaning of the Eucharist as seen in the eyes of Catholics. Good for non-Catholics to resolve the many puzzling questions of why do Catholics believe in the Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist. Well presented with everyday examples.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good February 28, 2013

This DVD covers an extended lecture by Fr Robert Barron on the nature of the Eucharist within the Catholic Church. It is divided into three parts - Sacred Meal, Sacrifice, and Real Presence. These are given by Fr Barron from a lecture he gave at a church to some of its parish members. This is not therefore done in the same style as the Catholicism Series that he later went on to head, so do not go into this expecting the same lofty production values.

These three parts all delve deeply into the meaning of the Eucharist for Catholics, and deal strongly with its Biblical basis, especially looking at its foretelling and relation to the Old Testament, and then on to the New.

I found that most of the first two parts were new to me in regards to previous material from Fr Barron, and I learned a lot from them. However, for those that have seen the Catholicism Series, a lot of the third part will not be so new. Of course this does not detract from the message at all, as of course these points are very important.

All in all, this is a very good DVD on the Catholic theological understanding of the Eucharist for anyone wanting to understand the Church's teaching on this sacrament, and to delve deeper into the Biblical basis for such a belief.
