Editorial Reviews

Review

For foliage plants, one of the best genus to consider is Euphorbia. Nearly all evergreen and leaves variegated, glaucous, purple, red and all shades of green, they are amongst the handsomest of plants for foliar interest. On top of that they flower to add seasonal interest too and lift a border when in bloom with their chartreuse hues. From towering trees and bushes to diminutive rock plants, from Asia, Africa and America, their diversity makes them the largest genus in the world, 25 species being native to the UK. Timothy Walker, curator of the National Collection of Euphorbia at the Oxford Botanic Gardens, gives an in-depth, expert look at these fascinating plants, giving detailed botanical facts, cultivation details, propagation, pest and disease advice and ideas on their uses in the garden. From Euphorbia myrsinites for the rock garden, Euphorbia griffithii for moist soil, Euphorbia dendroides for the conservatory and Euphorbia amygdaloides var. robbiae for dry shade, there are varieties to suit every possible situation. And don't forget the ubiquitous Christmas poinsettia - Euphorbia pulcherrima. Part of the RHS Wisley handbook series, this is a comprehensive and concise look at the genus Euphorbia, fully illustrated and clearly written. Aimed at both the amateur and professional grower, this is an invaluable addition to any serious horticulturalists bookshelf. - Lucy Watson --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

2.0 out of 5 stars Make sure the Euphorbia's you're considering are covered in this book, August 16, 2010

This review is from: Euphorbias (Rhs Wisley Handbooks) (Paperback)
This book is attractive, with nice photographs of the plants covered, but it only deals with a small part of the huge euphorbia genus. If you are located along the West Coast of the USA or in other mild climates, this book is not for you (in my opinion) because it does not cover the many beautiful succulent euphorbia that can be grown in mild climates. This book only covers the limited number of euphorbia that are hardy in Britain. The inside jacket of the book is somewhat misleading, as it informs the reader that the "handbook contains detailed information on all aspects of euphorbia care". If you live in Britain or similar climates, I imagine the book would be a great resource. Unfortunately I'll have to donate my book to a local charity, as it is not what I'd hoped for.
