Great little vacuum!, October 26, 2004
This review is from: Eureka 5550A Maxima Upright Bagless Vacuum (Kitchen)
I just got this vacuum today as a replacement for a 5 year old Eureka that kept smelling like it was going to go on fire. I paid about 4 times more for my old vacuum and I like this one better. It's even easier to push than my old one, and that one claimed to be self propelled. It sucked up so much dirt that I had to empty the cup twice. The cup holds a lot, but I hadn't been able to vacuum in 3 weeks. I like the Hepa filter and the fact it's very easy to see when it's time to change it because it's right on the side. It was so inexpensive that I hope it lasts, but it looks pretty well made. I'm thinking of buying another one to keep in the bedrooms so I don't have to lug this one around.

VACTACULAR!!!!!!, November 22, 2004
This review is from: Eureka 5550A Maxima Upright Bagless Vacuum (Kitchen)
I've had this vacuum for just over a week and I LOVE it! It arrived very quickly, several days sooner than promised (super saver shipping) and I put it to use immediately. We had just had our carpets cleaned a week earlier, but I was amazed and appalled by all the CRUD that I emptied from this vacuum's dust cup after just one use. I have three indoor cats; the Eureka seemed to pick up extraordinary amounts of hair, and seemed to pick up cat litter very well. My previous machine had problems with this even on low carpet setting. The cord length is great, I love the HEPA filter and the bagless feature, and the weight is ok for me...pushing the vacuum is easy for my mom as well, and she has complained about other vacs we've had; I also found the vac fairly easy to carry upstairs, as it has a good-sized hand-hold. The only problem I've had so far is getting the upholstery brush to stay in it's little cubby hole. The price I paid was a remarkable value. Bottom line: this Eureka bagless is easy to use, leaves the house smelling good, and does a super cleaning job. It's great!

A bagless vac BARGAIN! So many positives! 4.5 stars!, January 31, 2005
This review is from: Eureka 5550A Maxima Upright Bagless Vacuum (Kitchen)
It is rarely that I give a bagless vac any rating of 4 or more, unless it is outstanding. That said, I give 4.5 stars to the Eureka 'Maxima'. I am a bagless vac 'conoisseur' and expert, having owned many brands over the years, beginning with the famous 'Fantom' bagless vac about 10 years ago, which started the bagless craze. All in all, I have owned some real 'clunkers', but very few outstanding models. The Eureka is, for the price, absolutely outstanding in so many respects. Let's go over the most important points of the 'Maxima'. Firstly, I only paid seventy dollars for it on sale at a local mass merchant retailer. Secondly, it is a bagless design WITH a true HEPA filter, which is unheard of at this price point. Thirdly, the bagless debris cup design is well-executed, with easy access to one of the filters in order to clean it periodically, and the cup itself is of a good size and easy to insert and empty. Many bagless vacs fall short in this area. I should also add that you should periodically take the filter from the debris cup outside, and simply brush off the hairs and dust that has collected on it. Or you can use one of those 'air in a can' air dusters, which works better. Keeping the filter clean this way ensures you will always get excellent suction out of this vac. Also, the vac comes with an extra long cord, manual variable height adjustment, an extra belt, good on-board tools, a 'see thru' window so you can see if the belt needs replacing, an extra-wide track, a headlight, and an easy to reach on/off switch located towards the top of the vac. In addition, the 'Maxima' is not as loud as most other vacs, which is a pleasure to my eardrums, and it tracks 'like buttah', meaning it very easily glides on carpet surfaces, even on the lowest setting! I can't tell you how many vacs I have used that were annoyingly hard to push or pull. Not this Eureka! It is a total joy to use, and has very good suction as well. The vac is also the perfect weight, not too heavy nor too light. This is important in that you want to strike a proper weight balance so that the vac picks up debris well with the rotating brushes, but is not hard to push or pull. It seems to pick up my double coated dog's hair with aplomb, and even when I think the rug is clean, I am amazed at how much dust and detritus this vac picks up. My only reasons, and they are minor, for not giving this vac a 5 star rating is as follows. The debris cup is tinted, not clear, which makes it a bit hard to see how much debris is in the there, especially in low light. Also, the handle on the end of the hose, where it attaches to the vac, should have a handle on it, so you can grasp it better for easier insertion and removal. The Bissell vacs have this feature, and it makes things a bit easier. Lastly, it would have been nice if Eureka included a nice, small flat attachment that enables one to vacuum carpeted stairs. Minor shortcomings aside, this is an excellent, seemingly well-made bagless vac that should give you years of service. Buy with confidence.
