Great little vacuum!,
By Mary "Mom of 2" (Brooklyn, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Eureka 5550A Maxima Upright Bagless Vacuum (Kitchen)
I just got this vacuum today as a replacement for a 5 year old Eureka that kept smelling like it was going to go on fire. I paid about 4 times more for my old vacuum and I like this one better. It's even easier to push than my old one, and that one claimed to be self propelled. It sucked up so much dirt that I had to empty the cup twice. The cup holds a lot, but I hadn't been able to vacuum in 3 weeks. I like the Hepa filter and the fact it's very easy to see when it's time to change it because it's right on the side.
It was so inexpensive that I hope it lasts, but it looks pretty well made. I'm thinking of buying another one to keep in the bedrooms so I don't have to lug this one around.

VACTACULAR!!!!!!,

This review is from: Eureka 5550A Maxima Upright Bagless Vacuum (Kitchen)
I've had this vacuum for just over a week and I LOVE it! It arrived very quickly, several days sooner than promised (super saver shipping) and I put it to use immediately. We had just had our carpets cleaned a week earlier, but I was amazed and appalled by all the CRUD that I emptied from this vacuum's dust cup after just one use. I have three indoor cats; the Eureka seemed to pick up extraordinary amounts of hair, and seemed to pick up cat litter very well. My previous machine had problems with this even on low carpet setting. The cord length is great, I love the HEPA filter and the bagless feature, and the weight is ok for me...pushing the vacuum is easy for my mom as well, and she has complained about other vacs we've had; I also found the vac fairly easy to carry upstairs, as it has a good-sized hand-hold. The only problem I've had so far is getting the upholstery brush to stay in it's little cubby hole. The price I paid was a remarkable value. Bottom line: this Eureka bagless is easy to use, leaves the house smelling good, and does a super cleaning job. It's great!

A bagless vac BARGAIN! So many positives! 4.5 stars!,

This review is from: Eureka 5550A Maxima Upright Bagless Vacuum (Kitchen)
It is rarely that I give a bagless vac any rating of 4 or more, unless it is outstanding. That said, I give 4.5 stars to the Eureka 'Maxima'. I am a bagless vac 'conoisseur' and expert, having owned many brands over the years, beginning with the famous 'Fantom' bagless vac about 10 years ago, which started the bagless craze. All in all, I have owned some real 'clunkers', but very few outstanding models. The Eureka is, for the price, absolutely outstanding in so many respects. Let's go over the most important points of the 'Maxima'. Firstly, I only paid seventy dollars for it on sale at a local mass merchant retailer. Secondly, it is a bagless design WITH a true HEPA filter, which is unheard of at this price point. Thirdly, the bagless debris cup design is well-executed, with easy access to one of the filters in order to clean it periodically, and the cup itself is of a good size and easy to insert and empty. Many bagless vacs fall short in this area. I should also add that you should periodically take the filter from the debris cup outside, and simply brush off the hairs and dust that has collected on it. Or you can use one of those 'air in a can' air dusters, which works better. Keeping the filter clean this way ensures you will always get excellent suction out of this vac. Also, the vac comes with an extra long cord, manual variable height adjustment, an extra belt, good on-board tools, a 'see thru' window so you can see if the belt needs replacing, an extra-wide track, a headlight, and an easy to reach on/off switch located towards the top of the vac. In addition, the 'Maxima' is not as loud as most other vacs, which is a pleasure to my eardrums, and it tracks 'like buttah', meaning it very easily glides on carpet surfaces, even on the lowest setting! I can't tell you how many vacs I have used that were annoyingly hard to push or pull. Not this Eureka! It is a total joy to use, and has very good suction as well. The vac is also the perfect weight, not too heavy nor too light. This is important in that you want to strike a proper weight balance so that the vac picks up debris well with the rotating brushes, but is not hard to push or pull. It seems to pick up my double coated dog's hair with aplomb, and even when I think the rug is clean, I am amazed at how much dust and detritus this vac picks up. My only reasons, and they are minor, for not giving this vac a 5 star rating is as follows. The debris cup is tinted, not clear, which makes it a bit hard to see how much debris is in the there, especially in low light. Also, the handle on the end of the hose, where it attaches to the vac, should have a handle on it, so you can grasp it better for easier insertion and removal. The Bissell vacs have this feature, and it makes things a bit easier. Lastly, it would have been nice if Eureka included a nice, small flat attachment that enables one to vacuum carpeted stairs. Minor shortcomings aside, this is an excellent, seemingly well-made bagless vac that should give you years of service. Buy with confidence.

This vacuum was easy to put together and I was excited to try it out. My carpet didn't look especially dirty, but I ended up with a dust cup full of cat hair and dirt! Then I took it downstairs where I have that short dense carpet where dirt and things like sock lint stick to it. I usually end up going around and picking up the stuff once I'm done vacuuming. This vaccum picked up everything!! I was very impressed with it's suction power.
Here I am raving about it so why did I give it 4 stars instead of 5? It's very heavy, but then again I'm used to a 8 lb. Oreck. The attachment hose seems sturdy, but is awkward to use. Feels like a workout for your arms. The dust cup is nice ~ no bags to buy, but it's awkward to put back in. I'm imagining it getting broken by my teen daughter. I definately think it's a good buy for the money and don't regret buying it. There's a lot of gratification in seeing all the dirt in that little dust cup when you're finished cleaning.

5-Star Review,

I researched this sweeper and read all the reviews before ordering one for my 80 year old mother who was using a 1980's model self-propelled Eureka.
The review that told of this sweeper being used with greater ease than an older self-propelled Eureka was what sold me on ordering this sweeper. My mother suffers from heart/back problems and ease of use was my main consideration. She is absolutely amazed at how effortless this sweeper is for her to use as well as the exceptional performance of the Eureka 5550A in lifting embedded dirt/hair her other machine was unable to do. Her carpet is looking cleaner and brighter with each use. She bought a small, soft, paint brush to aide in keeping the filter clean. (She is telling all her friends about this Eureka model and they are e-mailing me to get info on purchasing one for themselves.) * * * * * 5-Star Rating for ease of use, satisfaction with performance, cleaning, and price. The (METALLIC)RED color of this sweeper was also viewed as a plus, since that's her favorite color!!!

Screw the handle on,

For the person that said her handle keeps coming off when she pulls it back. Try using the two screws that came with it, that will help keep your handle on :)

I did quite a bit or reaseach on bagless vacuums beforeI decided to purchase this one. I was a little leary of the low price, when so many others were selling for $100 or more, but I was pleasantly suprised! I was especially concerned about it being powerful enough for stubborn pet hair. I am more than satisified with the power and performance. I had no idea how much cat hair was still left in my carpet after using my old vaccum. I had almost a full container just after sweeping one room. This vacuum also has an extra long cord, so it makes it handy when cleaning from room to room. I would recommend this vacuum to anyone.

Got this vacuum because our old Panasonic was beginning to lose its life. Have to admit I have been pretty impressed. Like others it was amazing to see how much dirt and cat hair it pulled out of the rug...even after I went over the area with my old vacuum. Was easy to assemble, but looking at the instructions it doesn't seem it'll to be as easy to get to clogs etc. as with my Panasonic. You've got to unscrew some components. The vacuum is somewhat bulky and I wouldn't recommend it for cramped apartments or efficiencies. Just because it's bagless doesn't mean you lose thhe HEPA filter that will need to be periodically changed. It also has an internal filter that must be periodically cleaned. It's good that I kept my old vac for this purpose. Overall I think this is a good vacuum.

Amazing Bagless Upright,

This review is from: Eureka 5550A Maxima Upright Bagless Vacuum (Kitchen)
This was my first purchase of a bagless upright. I read the customer reviews on this vacuum before purchasing (2 weeks ago). I loved the free shipping Amazon.com offered. It picks up so much dust in a short amount of time. It is very light to push and pick up. I vacuumed right up to the room where my cat was sleeping and she didn't even wake up! That's how quiet it is. It's so easy to empty. I used the attachment brush to vacuum the cat hair off the chair, and I LOVE how it vacuums the cat hair up. Amazing! I want to order one for my daughter while it's still on sale. The neat thing is, I don't have to clean the outside of the unit after I vacuum, which I had to always do on my Hoover upright (with an Allergy dust bag). I would definitely recommend this vacuum, as it has a wide base also. Sometimes it's a little too wide in places, so I have to move the furniture a little further; but that's not a big deal. I like this Eureka vacuum VERY MUCH! It comes already assembled. You only have to slide on the upright handle and screw two screws and it's ready to use. It has a long cord too!
