3.0 out of 5 stars Unavailability of parts
I have been to Walmart, 2 Targets, Sears and KMart and not one of them had the part(belt) I needed for replacement. I called 3 Eureka service centers out of which one said they did not sell parts, another said they were only commercial, and the third place did not have it in stock. I finally called the fourth dealer, who says he has it ( I have yet to go pick it up). But...

This review is from: Eureka 5843AZ Litespeed Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
I spent a good 2 months analyzing all the vacuums available when my trusty Kenmore canister of 20 years started showing it's age. Basically, I was tired of having to replace the hose -which is now only available through the long process of ordering it as an outdated item. So, from inquiring through friends and reviewing the opinons on-line, I narrowed my choices down to either the Eureka Whirlwind Litespeed models, Hoover models, or Bissel. Eureka eventually won out mainly due to the overwhelmingly positive reviews on this site as well as Epinions.com. Even my dad encouraged me to consider Eureka. With an indoor cat, I really needed a good vacuum! My husand's allergies demanded no less!! So, off to Sears I went to see what they had in Eurekas - which wasn't much as I found out. Costco was just up the street and that's where I went next. Although the one I really wanted was not supplied there, the 5843AZ looked promising. I liked the duster included and thought it pretty neat that the machine even cleaned it after use!! Pulling out my cell phone, I called my husband and asked him to see what the reviews said. Only one reviewer and she gave it a two thumbs up! So, I decided that I was going to have to just bite the bullet and buy it!
As soon as I arrived home, I went to work putting it together. Actually, my husband did the work - which wasn't much. I was impressed with how easy it was to assemble!!! Within minutes, I had it plugged in and vacuuming! WOW!!! And I thought all these years I had been vacuuming!! WRONG! I was totally amazed at the amount of crude picked up by this vacuum! Our rug was new in 1971, so there was quite a bit of build-up!! I went over the same area many times and continued to get stuff sucked up into the canister. Even that nifty tubo brush did a bang up job on my husband's lounge chair. Our cat, Buster, loves to sleep ontop of it just above where my husband's head would be! Obviously, it was a source of frustration all the way around because of the cat hair left behind! But, that little turbo brush got it all!!! Trust me, Eureka does not pay anyone to say these things!! I believe these reveiws, now, because I've experienced the results! I paid $129.99 plus tax for my wonderful vacuum ( I've only had it a day, but I can tell it's going to be a good unit!!). Bad thing, though, about buying it at Costco, there are so many great 'other' things to buy there and I have to say my Eureka was not the only item I left the store with!! But, that's another story!! :) As a side note re: Costco, they have the best customer relations re: items that don't live up to the hype, so I would encourage anyone looking for vacuums to try them first!!
One thing that I was disappointed with is that this model does not have a washable HEPA filter. The one inside the canister is, though, so that's better than having none that are washable. I am going to inquire about the possibility of using the washable filter in place of the one that came with the unit. However, this little glitch has not dampended my enthusiasm for my new 'friend'!! Even my husband commented that he didn't smell any 'after burner' that he usually associates with vacuums! Another words, no dusty smells!!! HEPA really DOES work! :)
I highly recommend this unit! Certainly ran circles around my Kenmore - which is now permanently retired!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pet owner in Colorado, March 29, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Eureka 5843AZ Litespeed Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
This vacuum is so AWESOME! My old vacuum broke about three weeks ago and I had been looking to replace it, then I saw this one on HGTV and it struck my interest, so I bought it. It arrived about a week ago. It is amazing how efficiently it sucks up pet hair and dirt. (My husband and I own 2 cats and a dog.) It does not mention that this vacuum is self propelled, but it does seem to pull itself forward. There is a tiny bit of resistance pulling it back toward you, but my house is so clean, and with a lot less effort, I did not care. This vacuum was so much quieter than my old self-propelled Hoover. After vacuuming, there is no "vacuum smell" left behind. Additionally, cleaning out the dust cup is very simple and not as messy as bagless vacuums usually are.

The turbo nozzle is also fabulous. It diplays awesome suction power, but was gentle enough to vacuum a spot off my comforter where our dog had layed.

The spin duster makes dusting around the house much easier and cleaner. The vacuum electrostatically charges it so that it picks up dust like a magnet. When the duster is full of dust, you slip it back in to its holder and the vacuum cleans it and recharges it for you! It is also very gentle and great for dusting delicate items.

We live in a two story house, and this vacuum has a handle on the back side that makes carrying it up and down the stairs much easier. At 18 pounds, it's not too heavy either.

After buying this vacuum and using it, I am shocked that I got it at such a cheap price. I will be recommending it to everyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars makes cleaning fun!, June 11, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Eureka 5843AZ Litespeed Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
Odd as that sounds, it is actually fun and easy to vacuum especially compared to the Hoover I just retired.

It took two screws to put the handle on it. The Hoover I had took an engineering degree to put it together, LOL. As far as how it works! I couldn't be more happy!

My vacuum bit the dust and it had been 2 days since I had vacuumed. So I expected it to pick up dog hair but I haven't been outside much...which brings in dirt. It filled the cup with dog hair...but what really surprised me is that there was almost an inch of dirt in the cup!... And it somehow lifts the fibers of the carpet which now looks soft and fluffy again. I have actually had fun going around and vacuuming each day to see how much dirt it would pick up, (it took a few passes to deep clean the old dirt from the carpets).

By the way, I have carpet laid all over, but no pad under it so it had gotten quite squished down, but this vacuum has made it look soft again, (and lifted the fibers)! I can only imagine if I had pad...this vacuum would make it look new I bet.

Also, it is so quiet I wasn't sure it was even working right. I bet I could carry on a conversation on the phone while vacuuming, (it is still a vacuum and does make noise...but so much quieter than my old one). Nice change from the jet airplane sound of the other one.

So to those interested in a vacuum...two thumbs up to the Eureka Lightspeed Spin Duster. The Spin Duster is a fun bonus. I have a small problem with the spin duster in that it doesn't spin very much. But an easy solution to that is to lightly hold the handle so that it doesn't wabble. With this simple effort it spins like crazy and works awesome...much better than expected. It is so easy to use that instead of passing on cleaning the fan or the coils under the fridge, I just grab the duster and watch the dust 'jump' off of the fan blades and coil.

Oh, and this has the full hepa filter system...so it actually smelled clean rather than the old one that smelled like I just shook out a rug in the house. A previous reviewer mentioned the difficulty in shaking out the filter in the dirt cup. I can see their point but I just hold the filter down a few inches into my kitchen trash can and hit it against the sides. The dirt seems to just fall off into the garbage but I do see a little bit go up in the air before dropping back down, but it is minimal if any. I suppose you could get around it if you had a handvac to run across the filter when you cleaned it. But I think they also have filters that you need to shake off. Either way, it doesn't seem to bother me to shake the filter off when everything else is so much easier and such a time saver on this vacuum.

I look forward to using the turbo brush to clean the truck. I haven't actually used it yet but have 'tested' it. It is pretty amazing how much power it spins with, and I will try to update this review once I use it on the truck. It will be nice not to have to run to the car wash to vacuum.

The hepa filter is not washable but I plan to upgrade to the washable filter in 6 months or so.

The cord is 30 feet long so I was able to toss the old extension I used with the other one.

An odd note. The hose is plenty long enough to reach just about anything, (plus there is the wand and an extension), but as soon as I put the tools on the hose, the suction draws the hose back...making it difficult to use. It also isn't what I would call light. But both of these points may not be a fair judgment sense I broke my neck in a car accident and have difficulty lifting or pulling on anything.

Overall, I am not the type that likes to clean house but I like my house to be clean. The wide path on this really does cut down on the time it takes, the tools are easy, easy, easy to use. The spin duster has eliminated my procrastination to get those cob webs that I see occasionally on the ceiling. And it does an awesome job! I can't believe I thought I was getting my house clean before.

I have recommended this vacuum to my family.

UPDATE: One of the reasons I went with this model was the turbo brush attachment so that I could clean my new truck. As it turns out the suction is so strong that this vac did a great job without the brush.

But the turbo brush is a huge (unexpected) help when cleaning small rugs, and furniture. I have had this vacuum for a while now, and love it as much as the day I first used it. Usually after a while of operating a new item I can think of something to improve on it...not so with this item. :o)

5.0 out of 5 stars Truely Amazed!!, June 23, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Eureka 5843AZ Litespeed Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
I had been looking to replace our Bissel vacuum that was about 6 years old. I was never really happy with the Bissel because it was very heavy and pieces seemed to start breaking sooner than I would have reasonably expected. After a lot of research, the Eureka Litespeed Upright Vacuum seemed to have overall positive reviews from both allery sufferers and cat owners, and a reasonable price. Since my son has fairly bad allergies and we also have 2 cats that spend most of their time indoors, I thought I would give the Eureka a try. I purchased the vacuum on 6-1-2003, and I can't even begin to describe the dirt, dust, and cat hair the vacuum picked up. I NEVER imagined our house had so much dirt. After vacuuming the first time, the dust cup was full and I also had to wash the dust cup filter. Same thing happened the second time I vacuumed. The third time I vacuumed, the dust cup was only half full. I guess I was finally making progress. The vacuum even came with a bonus hose brush attachment that actually turns. This attachment has proven great for those places where the vacuum won't fit like the far side of my son's bed. And, as vacuums go, this one is MUCH quieter than our old one. Our cats are not yet sure whether or not they should be afraid of it. The bonus duster is nice, but I do still like my feather duster better. Although, it is nice to not have to dust after vacuuming. Now, I am not a professional by any means, but this vacuum has truely amazed me. It is light weight, has powerful suction, all the dirt/dust stays in the cup which indicates to my untrained eye that all the filters really are working. The 2 minor inconveniences I have noticed are that the on/off switch is down on the vacuum body and not up on the handle, and the handle release is a plastic piece that doesn't appear too sturdy. Overall, a definite 5 stars. I am really happy with the price/performance!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Vacuum Cleaner, July 7, 2003

This review is from: Eureka 5843AZ Litespeed Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
We just moved to a new house with much more carpeting than before. Decided it was time to upgrade to a heavy duty vacuum cleaner. After researching, determined that HEPA was definitely the way to go. I found the Hoover 5720 and the Eureka 4870 online and after reading mostly favorable reviews, went down to the store where I found them online to make the purchase. Turns out that the store ...did not carry either of the models I was interested in. Frustrated, I went to the membership store next door and saw the Eureka 5843. I did not know anything about it, but it [cost] less than the other two models and I thought the spin duster was pretty cool, so I decided to go for it. After I got home, I was please to see all of the positive reviews. I had just vacuumed the day before, and as many others have written, I was amazed at the amount of dirt and dust it pulled out of the carpet. Since we have small kids, I feel much more comfortable to see them lying and playing on the carpet. There is little to no smell afterwards. As some have mentioned the air even smells somewhat fresh. It is also relatively quiet for a 12 amp vacuum and it is quite a bit lighter than the other two models that I was looking at. I was worried that my 19 month old daughter might freak out from the noise of a larger vacuum, but that did not turn out to be the case. The suction on the hose seems to be quite strong and more than adequate. Emptying the dust cup and cleaning the filter are not fun, but it is not too bad. I think the best way to clean filter will be to bring it down to the gas station and blow all of the dust off of it with the air compressor. As I remember, it was not exactly a piece of cake to change the vacuum bags on the bagged models either. The duster seems to work pretty well. No problem with getting it to spin. I don't think it works any better than conventional dusters, but it is much easier to clean than a conventional one.

Overall, I am extremely pleased with the performance of the vacuum and feel that it is a very good value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Be Happier, May 21, 2003

Such a great machine for the money. Just purchased yesterday and totally satisfied after the maiden voyage. Like the other reviewers point out, you will not believe how much stuff this vacuum picks up. Its actually a bit unnerving. It is also a very quiet machine during operation. It is a bit bulky and the parts are not made from the highest quality plastic but for the price I think this product will be difficult to beat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Excellent Vacuum!, March 30, 2003

Just bought this vacuum a few weeks ago.
I was replacing a ... bagless vacuum I bought 2 years ago.
The ... was loud, heavy and annoying.
This Eureka blows the ... away.
It's lighter, easier to use, quieter, just as powerful, better looking, and much less expensive. The dust collecting container works better than the Hoover. It's bigger and less of a hassle to empty.
(Part of the reason why the Eureka is cheaper than the ...is that it doesnt come with a bare floor attachment and enough extension wands to do proper bare floor vacumming. I purchased the attachments seperately. Now Im all set...)

Do not hesitate to buy this vacuum.
It's nearly perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mother to two shedding kittens, September 12, 2003

Okay, they are full-grown cats and they shed, a lot. This vacuum does an unbelievable job of getting ALL of the hair up on the first try. With my old vacuum, I had to pass over the same spot time and again -- even then, the result was less than perfect. Better still is the ease with which the waste canister can be emptied. No more struggline with dusty bags! This is a great machine at a terrific price!

I read the reviews on this vacuum and decided to buy, hoping that it lived up to the hype. Well, it performs even better than expected. I "vacuumed" my living room with my old Dirt Devil just before giving the Eureka a try. I thought the carpet was pretty clean after the Dirt Devil, but the Eureka dust cup was about almost half full after just one room!!! It picked up all kinds of cat hair (we have a long-haired Persian) that the Dirt Devil missed. In a word, this machine is UNBELIEVABLE.

5.0 out of 5 stars A cleaning dynamo for less than $100, April 29, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Eureka 5843AZ Litespeed Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
So,as I was vacuuming the hard floors in the house, I was thinking, "I love this vacuum so darn much I should tell other people how good it is!"

Bought the cleaner at Sam's for about $99. I used the reviews from this site to make my choice. I'd used reviews from Consumers Report to purchase my last cleaner, a Sharp which turned out to be an absolute bust. I cancelled my subscription to Consumers Report because I was so mad that they had recommended such a dud.

The 1998 model Sharp replaced a Kirby purchased in 1957! Can't complain about that Kirby but much better vacuums are available now and they are much cheaper.

Just think for $99 you can get a cleaning dynamo! It does a good-not great-job on edges and even picks up popcorn kernels off ceramic tile floors instead of spinning them around and spitting them across lthe room.

It works great on bare surfaces. It pulls the dirt right out of carpet. It doesn't tip over on you when you use the hose. (I've taken the vacuum to the local vacuum parts and repair shop to have them make a 12 foot hose attachment. Now I can clean above the soffits, the top of doors and drapes..........

The only small complaint I have is that the cleaning ability is so good that the HEPA filter gets clogged rather easily. I am using an air compressor to blow the filter clean. I'm going to purchase another filter and get both of them clogged before I have to start up the air compressor to clean them out.

Oh, I do have another caveat. The weight of the vacuum appears to be greater in the upper part of the vacuum than in some of the other vacuums. It does take more effort and is more tiring than some other vacuums I've used.

The bottom line, however, with the price and the ability to clean hard and carpeted surfacesis it still rates as a FIVE STAR in my opinion.
