5.0 out of 5 stars Works great!
Had already ordered before the previous bad review appeared. Was worried. Followed instructions, set machine on right side with bucket (takes some effort since that side is not flat) for 12 hours before initial use. After that set flat, and turned on. Works great made several types of ice cream with no problem. Works a lot better than "freeze the bucket"...

1.0 out of 5 stars Bummed
Looked for a long time for a Simac Jr., and this looks for all the world like the same thing, so I ordered it and eagerly waited several months before it shipped. Certainly looked heavy-duty. I was confused about the big warning printed on the top of the unit to store it up on one end before using it, so I called customer service for Euro-Pro. And called. And called...

Works great made several types of ice cream with no problem. Works a lot better than "freeze the bucket" type makers, atleast in florida where air temps are usually higher and bucket does not last long enough. It is quieter than my bread machine or kitchenaid mixer. Just need some more removable buckets. Very relieved and happy.

And called. And called. Finally got through to the rude customer service person. Hmm. Forget it; I just want to make ice cream. The unit seemed to work ok at first, but when the compressor turned on, it was ear-splittingly loud, like a loud blender or air compressor, and it had to run about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to freeze a batch to "gooey" consistenly. Unit takes 15 minutes to pre-cool, then another 50 minutes supposedly to freeze, but mine took around 90 more minutes. Tasted great using the enclosed recipes, but even running in the garage it was hard to live with, and unlike other similar machines, there is no auto-shut off for the paddle motor; it says you have to stop it immediately when it stops or it will get damaged, so you have to pretty mush sit there the last 15-30 minutes holding your ears and watching it. Maybe mine was defective, so I returned it. I was disappointed and unwilling to try another one. I hope someone else has better luck. I'm beginning to think you just have to spend six bills for the bigger machines to get a decent self-freezing machine. So, I guess for now I'm going to try a cheap reconditioned freeze-the-can style machine.

1.0 out of 5 stars No go., July 10, 2003

Based upon Amazon's good price, I thought I'd give this unit a try. Unfortunately, both the original unit and a replacement unit had the similar cooling noise problem as a couple of the other reviews had made note. Amazon was great about paying return shipping fees. I'm going to give the Lello / Simac machine a try next based upon its positive reviews.

3.0 out of 5 stars Manufacturing problem, June 28, 2003

There is a construction or design problem with this ice cream maker. The plastic cooling fan (that blows across the compressors radiator fins) is not properly attached to the fan motor. The fan slips forward during operation, until it is 'grinding' on the radiator fins, making a loud noise (probably what the other reviewer heard). This could also prevent proper cooling, reducing the ice cream maker's effectiveness.

This is easily fixed (which I've done, think superglue) if you know your way around a tool box, but that's really not an acceptable solution. They use a couple of non-standard screws, which can be undone with a torx screw bit (even though there is a post in the middle of the screw). There are no warranty labels you have to rip either, so if you tried and failed, you could send it back.

Once fixed, it makes great ice cream.

1.0 out of 5 stars Reason for storing on side, July 13, 2005

This is not about the machine but addresses the confusion of putting it on its side for a time. It is the same principle of having to move a refrigerator upright and not lying it down in the bed of a truck. There is liquid in the compressor coils and it has to work it's way back to where it is supposed to be before you turn it on.

1.0 out of 5 stars This is junk!, July 3, 2003

I waited nearly four months for this item and, finally, when it arrived the cooling system and motor did not work. I returned it and Amazon replaced it. The second one didn't work either. Not only that but it took three days to get through to the manufacturer and their customer support wasn't much help either.
Have returned the second one to Amazon and gone back to my old reliable Krups (pre-chill the bucket in the freezer) ice cream maker. It always works. Don't waste your money or your time with this piece of junk!

1.0 out of 5 stars I Scream, July 4, 2003

I got the machine, and laid it on its side overnight. Next day tried to run a batch of ice cream. Followed instructions, but the first sign of trouble was when the compressor suddenly got very loud (basically sound and noise level of a *loud* central air conditioner -- as heard from right next to it). The machine ran it's full 65 minute cycle, and no dice. I tried to run it through another cycle (after waiting a couple of minutes to turn the compressor back on as per instructions). Unfortunately, it forces you to wait 15 minutes to start the mixer. And even more unfoturnate, it still didn't cool my ice cream enough to freeze it (possibly partially related to the low fat recipe). I think the compressor must be of low quality.

3.0 out of 5 stars Can be fixed, November 4, 2004

I got this as a gift for my b-day. I too had the same problems when you start it up it sounded like an aircraft but if you take off the three little screws on the side and place a drop of superglue on the shaft where the fan blade attaches to your in business. Simple fix, stupid of the company for all those units sent back for this problem. Makes a hell of a great ice cream.

Euro pro, famous for making inferior products, and also sells under the name of Bravetti, which unsuspecting HSN buyers get their share of lousy products from, makes this ice cream maker. I received this as a birthday present a few months ago, and I'm glad that I didn't pay the money for this horrible machine. I knew that I was doomed when you had to put it on its' side for 12 hours before using it (what reputable company would make you do that with one of their products, would kitchen aid?). I did what the instructions said, just like in the manual, and tried to make my first batch of ice cream, and when the compressor unit turned on, it sounded like a loud jet engine taking off it is LOUD! Other writers suggest to take a few screws off and put glue where the fan is? No Way!!! When you purchase something it should be working when you get it!!!! It broke within 30 minutes of use! Calling Euro Pro is a disaster, their customer service is rude!!!!! I took this hunk of junk to the thrift store. I bought the self compressed ice cream unit from Lello, and it is wonderful. I took it right out of the box, turned it on and had my first batch of delicious ice cream in a 1/2 hour! Euro pro has made inferior products for years, numerous complaints from consumers, but retailers still sell their terrible products. Amazon should take heed, and especially Home Shopping Network (HSN) for selling these inferior and at times dangerous products under the Bravetti name. Amazon has wonderful customer service if they had to deal with Euro Pro like we did, I am sure that Amazon would no longer sell their products.
