Wow was I worried about buying this sweeper after reading the reviews! Insofar as the customer service issues, I can't comment as I haven't dealt with the company directly.

Now, to the procuct itself. About the people who complained about performance - remember that you are buying a 'sweeper.' There is no suction. This thing will NOT perform a vacuum's duties. I got this thing because I had to rent an apartment while doing a corporate relocation. My old vacuum wasn't so good and I didn't want to move it from my house into a cramped apartment since I intended to replace it anyway. So, I figured that I needed a little sweeper to do the 'surface cleaning' in the interim. It works great!!! I've had it for over a month and it's excellent on low and med pile carpeting. It picks up kitty litter from vinyl and tile flooring (BIG deal for me since I have two kitties). The Shark is by no means perfect, but I'm taking into account that it does what it does without the benefit of suction!!!

I was also concerned about battery life from reading the reviews. If you remove the battery pack, you realize that it's not very big and shouldn't hold a massive charge. It doesn't. But, it holds enough charge to run on carpet for about 20 minutes. I think if you need this for much longer than that each time you use it then this is not the right tool for the job. Buy a vacuum. That's what they are made to do.

Okay, reality check...obviously, if you use this on a carpet for a month, your carpet will be FILTHY just below the surface (you know, no suction...). I bought my new vacuum (Eureka Boss 4870GZ - FANTASTIC MACHINE). The vacuum pulled quite a bit of dirt, but the place didn't LOOK that much cleaner. I have no intention of replacing the Shark with 'Da Boss.' The vacuum is heavy and loud and requires some staging to use since it's AC powered. I have a 3-year old and I would have the vacuum out about 15 times a day. The Shark is quick, light, and has a comfortable grip. I follow my kid around the house with it and use the vacumm twice a week. The carpet never looks trashy.

I hope this helps with making your choice.

All in all, the sweeper is a really good tool if you use it for what it was designed to do.

I read the reviews- all of them- with an open mind, because I thought personally, I sometimes will like a product that no one seems to like. I wanted to try a cordless vac, and I did own a euro pro wonder vac one time, and it performed well for me, so I decided on this one. I didn't buy it here, but I paid about the same price and it is the same model. I sure wish I didn't and here is why... While it does pick up some things, it also left stuff behind and it sounds like it always losing power- I ran over a piece of paper the size of a dime 3 times before it actually gave in and sucked it up.. It is lightweight, and it does go under tight places, but it just didn't perform well and it is brand new! I let it charge for the 20 hours, did everything right, and it just doesn't have much power. Running it just reminds me of using a child-like vacuum- I guess if you are just wanting something to do very light surface cleaning, this is your vacuum. I just want to get the dirt out of my low pile rugs and hard-wood floors, and I don't want to have to run over small objects on the floor multiple times. This seems more like a thirty dollar vacuum, not a fifty dollar one..anyway, I tried it, despite the negative reviews, and I am sorry I didn't listen because I won't be able to get my money back.. I guess for you out there that are considering this vac, I would think twice about this one, and make sure that you can at least get your money back if you don't like it.. hope this helps.

1.0 out of 5 stars RE: Bitten by another Shark, March 6, 2005
By
J. Pepoon "el suave" (Claremont, CA United States) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Euro-Pro Shark 13-Inch cleaning path 3-Speed Cordless Sweeper (Kitchen)
Yesterday I received the latest addition to my "Shark" collection - the Euro-Pro 13 inch, 3 Speed Cordless Sweeper (modeLV647H). I am certain Euro-Pro changes the model numbers frequently in a vain attempt to hypo sales. I did not purchase this latest gem from Amazon.com (instead I foolishly paid $10 more for this my most recent lesson in purchasing defective products); I bought this item online from one of the "three letter" outfits. Yes, I did buy the item in spite of the "first person", always helpful Amazon reviews......foiled again by my own refusal to learn from the past.

After charging up the sweeper for the recommended 20 hours (seems like an unusually long time, but I wanted to follow instructions to the letter)I prepared to remove a sizeable amount of dust (dust only - honest) that had accumulated under my bed (two years worth I believe). Unfortunately the "Shark Gods" had declared that such was not to be the case!

After ten minutes of continous (not intermittant) operation I experienced smoke rising from the sweeper's head assembly and a distinct loss of dust "pickup" capability. I then emptied the plastic box-like dust "cup" and proceded to resume my cleaning with a similar result - much smoke, no vacuuming capability. What always amazes me is how smoothly the Shark demos go on tv whether it is "Mark the Head Shark" using the now legendary "steam bottle" (which I also purchased elsewhere much to my regret) or some smiling demo lady (usually "Elizabeth") vacuuming away, sucking up every piece of dust, hair and grime in sight on an anonymous carpet or steam cleaning bathroom/kitchen fixtures while I sit enthralled viewing the always exceptional cleaning experience on my tv set.

However, when I purchase the same advertised Shark product all heck breaks loose and malfunctions reign supreme. Needless to say (but I will anyway) this latest Shark is going back in its tank and I will promptly return it to Plattsburg, New York (headquarters) or somewhere in Virginia (at my expense of course) to the three letter company where I purchase it - using a three letter company (UPS)for the job.

The 30 day trial period must have been invented for Euro Pro/Shark - it has saved much misery in the world. Needless to say they have the greatest marketing department in the history of retailing....

Ah, but I will continue to purchase Euro-Pro products for the "thrill" of briefly using them and then paying for their return to the vendors. Is this living? Probably not.

Regards,

Jim

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast, Easy, Clean, November 17, 2004
This review is from: Euro-Pro Shark 13-Inch cleaning path 3-Speed Cordless Sweeper (Kitchen)
I don't like to vacum. I don't like the plugging, unplugging, dragging, knocking over, heavy lifting...However, I like my floors neat and clean and can't handle dust becuase of my allergies. If you are like me, this Shark 3-speed is a great product for you. It is very light, mobile, easy to use. No cord! It works great on my shag area rug, hardwood, and tile. I can easily slide this vac all the way under my queen-sized bed and couches (which are only 4 inches of the floor) and vacum all the scary things under there, without having to move anything or change any attachments.
The downside? The suction is very good for a cordless vac, but this is not a heavy-duty vacuum,or a substitute for scrubbing your floor. It has trouble picking up tiny grit against the baseboards and is hit or miss with some large objects. Its a perfect thing to use often to maintain clean, not to deep clean.

1.0 out of 5 stars Euro-Pro Shark Cordless Vacuum - - Hopeless!!, May 26, 2005
This review is from: Euro-Pro Shark 13-Inch cleaning path 3-Speed Cordless Sweeper (Kitchen)
We have bought three Euro-Pro Shark Cordless Vacuums in ONE YEAR! We really wanted the cordless vac to work, since we have a small condo, and we thought the size and power would be perfect for our home. Each ownership experience was worse than the one before it. Take our advice, buy a Hoover instead!

Below is the letter I emailed to Euro-Pro Customer Service on April 10, 2005. Immediately following is their response of April 15, 2005 . . .

"Euro-Pro Operating LLC
Customer Service,

"On March 2nd, 2005 I purchased a Shark 13" Cordless Sweeper, Model # UV617. I use it about once a week. The problem I'm having is when I use the sweeper, within two or three minutes, the green light turns red and the red lights (all three) on the speed control flash, and the machine stops. According to the owner's manual, this is an indication that the battery needs charging. But it seems very strange for the battery to run down so quickly. The only thing I can think of is that perhaps it has a faulty battery or charging cord. Can you help with this problem?

"By the way, this is the third Shark Cordless Sweeper we have purchased in the past year. We live in a small condo (700 sq. feet), so the concept of a space saving cordless sweeper is very appealing to us. However, we had many problems with the first two machines, so we finally got rid of them. We decided to give the Shark Cordless Sweeper one more try with this most current unit. If we can't make this one work for us, we'll have to move on to another brand of sweeper.

"Thank you for your help."

This was their reply 5 days later . . .

"We do apologize for the delay in responding to your request.

"We have placed an order for a replacement battery pack of your cordless sweeper at no charge to you. Please accept it with our compliments.

"We appreciate your business and hope that you will give us another opportunity to serve you better.

With Regards,
Customer Service Team
EuroPro Operating LLC"

As of today, May 26th, I have not seen the replacement battery they promised nor have I heard another word from them, despite a follow-up email from me. No wonder the product is of such poor quality! It matches the customer service of this company!!

Three days ago I took my own advice and actually bought a Hoover.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrendous!!! Avoid!, May 14, 2006
By
This review is from: Euro-Pro Shark 13-Inch cleaning path 3-Speed Cordless Sweeper (Kitchen)
I purchased this product last week and have already returned it to BJs. What a waste of my time and money! For the past five years, I have used Eureka's "The Boss" Lite Cordless in my home filled with dog and cat fur, bird feathers, and messy husband and toddler syndromes. Unfortunately, it has finally worn out. Our floors are particularly bad in the spring with shedding and moulting pets, so this was a key time to test this product. It failed!
Unlike "The Boss" it failed to consistently pick up fur and was equally unable to pick up small items such as granola and feathers. I tried all of the various settings and the recommended multiple charges/discharges and vacuuming "pathways" to improve function. None of them worked.
Additionally, the product was awkward to use, especially when your surfaces change (playmats, linoleum, hardwoods, tile, carpets - we have it all), which caused the machine to jam and turn off. The receptacle filled quickly and dramatically reduced suction. The Shark was not as maneuverable as "The Boss" in tight spaces because of its size and shape. I had to give up on my stairs.
I had my old "Boss" for five years, as stated above. I'll be reordering another today. I've been very satisfied with it (our's is nicknamed "Miss Betty") and its been a champ with the copious amounts of dog fur in our house. Save your time and money - avoid the Shark and choose a different cordless sweeper!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for kids and pets, May 5, 2007
By

How great to be able to clean up real quick without having to lug the big vacuum out, like that one crushed goldfish on the carpet or the pile of dirt where the cat knocked over your plant? It is great. Just make sure you follow the battery charging directions to a T, the first time and everytime after that. That is how to keep the battery good. Mine has worked great for about 5 months. I hope I am not kicking myself for writing this in a few more months, but so far, it is awesome!

I bought a Euro-Pro Shark UV617 about six months ago. First 3 months it works great. But it's battery life reduced rapidly after that. One months ago it can only finish my 5 feet by 7 feet kitchen floor after 24 hrs' recharge. And two weeks ago it simply quit sweeping. What a junk!

I too don't like the plugging, unplugging, dragging, knocking over, heavy lifting ... either. And I really wanted this to work. I did all the research and found that people either hated it or loved. And if they hated it, it was generally the handle or the battery that threw them off. Well, I decided to go ahead and buy one (from Sears with the extended warranty where they will just replace the whole unit). Brought it home, assembled it, and wouldn't you know, that handle is worse then everybody made it sound to be. I never did get it to work. But like I said, I really wanted this to work, so I was envisioning putting duct tape or super glue around it to make it work. Which, I probably would have done if I could have gotten the battery to charge. The battery would not charge regardless of what I did. Needless to say, it is back in its box and headed back to Sears. I'm just glad all those people that gave it bad reviews can't say "told you so".

1.0 out of 5 stars battery replacement, April 11, 2006
This review is from: Euro-Pro Shark 13-Inch cleaning path 3-Speed Cordless Sweeper (Kitchen)
The sweeper itself is a pretty good sweeper as long as the original battery works. But try to replace that! I placed an order on Jan. 7th and ordered two battery packs. One must order the battery replacement from the manufacturer- it is not available from any other source. it is not until the order is made that you learn that it will take 3 to 4 weeks to fulfill the order. In my case over three months have elapsed and still no batteries. So my sweeper is permanently out of order. I am furious and will never again order any other euro-pro product.
