5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun, superb replayabilitty July 25, 2011
I've been playing EU for ten years now, and while I don't always like the changes (as patches progressed in EU2, I went back to 1.05 from 1.08, for example). EU3 is the best of the bunch, best looking, best playability. As I write this it's ridiculously cheap for the main game and all the expansions but Divine Wind, if you like this type of game, you must buy EU: Chronicles. Also, the original music is fantastic, my daughter put it on her iPod.

What the game is: Europa Universalis starts in 1399 (though you can pick any date), and ends in 1821. You can play any country in existence at the time, and with a bit of effort many which no longer existed. You can conquer the world as France, England or Spain (Castile). Explore as Portugal, or play an American Indian tribe and try to fend off the Europeans, to say nothing of the many asian countries or those in Africa or the middle east. This is a true strategy game, so don't think that you can build fifty zergs and rush your enemies. You must manage your "badboy" rating or face many opponents in war. Try to have a good reason for your next war (Casus Belli), but don't worry, many are lying around, and more can be fabricated by spies. If you're used to Civilization, the main thing you'll have to learn is to work at a different pace. You have 400+ years, don't expect to conquer the world in 50.

EU3 is an amazing game, especially with the expansion packs included in this collection. It is not perfect, however, as Paradox have moved away from historical determinism (why would France inherit Burgundy every game at a set time, even if the Burgundians are a major power and the French are still trying to grab Poitou and Gascogne?). What you lose in the character of each nation (you can still get historical monarchs and other leaders), you gain in a more flexible system. In the end, EU3 is a complex game which will take some getting used to. I can still recall trying to find "Mamlukes" in the tutorial for EU1, and thinking I'd never ever have enough money. Well, I have to get back to my Castile game (which makes me a wimp, many long-time players will only start as some tiny principality in Germany where surviving the first five years is very difficult). Once you get accustomed to the pace of the game, I expect you'll love it. I've played hundreds of hours and I always come back, I just play a bigger country if it's been a month or two because I was playing another Paradox title (Victoria 2 in this case). Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice game. September 30, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
I got the idea in my head recently that I wanted to basically build an army and take over the world... or at least Europe. This game was a fine means of indulging my world (or Europe) domination plans. I found it to be a fairly difficult game at first and even as I figured things out and got better stayed pretty challenging. (Having bought it by download and not having an instruction manual did not help I'm sure. I had to go with 4 stars because though I did enjoy the game at first it just didn't hold my interest like I thought it might. I don't regret the purchase and it piqued my interest enough that I may come back to it at some point. If you buy it I hope that you enjoy and thanks for taking the time to read my review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Strategy December 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
If you are a grand strategy fan then this is the game for you. EU III focuses on developing the economic, social, political, cultural, and social (basically everything)structures of your country. You can choose any country, empire, or state that existed within the period. The start date is 1399, but you can start anytime between then and 1821 (when the game ends). The game is interesting, because actual historical events can happen (maybe a different time or in a different way than actual history) if you or the AI meet certain requirements within the game. I enjoy the nice balance of actual history and alternate history that the game gives. I will say that the game has a very steep learning curve, but if you put in a couple of hours to learn it then this game can be fantastic and so rewarding!

I'm a world history teacher and I wish I could figure out some way to use this game in my classroom without it being too boring or take too much time, but I haven't figured that out yet. I've also thought about using Civilization in my classroom, but this game is so much deeper and has so many more options. I've also picked up EU: Rome Gold and Victoria 2. Both of those games are pretty much the same concept as EU III but in different periods and with a little different formats.

Game code work on Steam?
I don't think it does. It'd be nice if we could get a Steam code, though.
