Book Description

0786412232 978-0786412235 May 16, 2002
The geographic scope of this work is all of Europe, European Russia, Great Britain, Ireland, Iceland, the Mediterranean Islands such as Sicily and Corsica, the Caucasus area north of Turkey, including territory now in the new republics of Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan, and the Balkans and Greece.

There are entries for shorts, animation, silents, television series, films (both theatrical and made-for-television releases), miniseries, epics, war films, dramas, literary adaptations, comedies, horrors, mysteries, musical comedies, and operettas. Complete entries provide such particulars as the title, date, alternate title(s), black & white or color, nationality, director, production company, length, producer, screenplay writer, literary source, cinematographer, score composer, actors (in order of importance) with character names and a brief synopsis or description, commentary, and references to the Variety review and one other filmographic source. Most of the titles were produced in Europe or Hollywood, but a few were made in such countries as Japan, Canada, Australia, Mexico, and Argentina. Productions based on Shakespeare’s plays themselves are omitted; those based on his life are included. Opera and ballet films are omitted but musical comedy and operetta films are included, as are silent films based on operas. Fairy tales are out but folkloric works are in. Documentaries are not included. Subject (places, periods, events, and historical figures) and name indexes allow for easy reference.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This specialized filmography encompasses a variety of formats, including but not limited to shorts, animation, television series, silent films, miniseries, epics, and war films. According to the author (a librarian and film reviewer), the volume complements such works as Gary A. Smith's Epic Films: Casts, Credits, and Commen tary on Over 250 Historical Spectacle Movies (McFarland, 1991), which covers films on the ancient world, and Kevin J. Harty's The Reel Middle Ages: American, Western and Eastern European, Middle Eastern, and Asian films about Medieval Europe (McFarland, 1999). The coverage here begins in 1500, the cutoff date for Harty's book. Most of the films were produced in Europe or the U.S.

Each entry (arranged in alphabetical order) contains the title, alternate title, date, length, director, whether the film is black and white or color, cast (in order of appearance, with character name), nationality, producer and production company, literary source, cinematographer, score composer, a brief synopsis or description with critical commentary (20 words to several paragraphs), and one other filmographic source. Works based on Shakespeare's plays are omitted; however, productions based on his life are included. Opera and ballet films are omitted, but musical comedies and operettas are included. Fairy tales are not included, but several films based on folklore are listed. The bibliography includes titles to assist readers in "finding information on other historical films and TV and to demonstrate that scholarly and fan interest in historical films is increasing." Name and subject indexes complete the volume.

The Europe of 1500-1815 on Film and Television is recommended for large public libraries and academic libraries that support a film studies curriculum. RBB
