Rail Travel 2009,
By
This review is from: Europe by Eurail 2009: Touring Europe by Train (Europe by Eurail: How to Tour Europe by Train) (Paperback)
The book arrived on time. It features major key cities to visit in Europe by rail. Details as to arriving by air, train, money exchanges, baggage storage, and description of the train stations are included. Day excursions and sights/attractions are presented along with the stops you can visit when traveling by train. It explains the train passes and departure and arrival times and train numbers. Very good book. Not real heavy, but it has a lot of pages - 540. It includes; Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland,France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. I recommend it. It has good ideas as to what to visit, descriptions and itinerary ideas. Helps in your planning.

This book would be great for those who are planning a trip to Europe and doing a base city/day trip format for their travels. We back-pack throughout the continent, moving from city to city - which is not the idea behind this book. This book would serve those well who are planning on landing accomodations in one spot for several days and then doing various day trips from their hub. It is very well written and ideal for those with those kinds of plans. One thing though - it was a tad outdated for using a title with 2009 in it, as in 2009, the Eurail Global pass now includes 21 countries - rather than the former 18 countries - so some of the eastern countries are not included.

Don't recommend at all! Thought it would be helpful, but it just made things more confusing. The Eurail stations at your destinations have a complete listing of times and schedules and are better to equip you with your transfers than trying to fumble through this book...Save your money!

In planning my Eurocation, I purchased this book among others. This particular guide was informative on a city-by-city basis as well as for an overall country perspective. I used it to assist me in narrowing down my choices and in developing a sketchy itinerary. I liked the details of how to purchase tickets, read schedules, gain information, etc. I tore out applicable sections to take with me while traveling. It was the first travel guide I obtained in preparation for my trip. I found I had unanswered questions that led me to other guides and to the internet to fill in the gaps. But it was a good springboard from which to heighten my awareness and anticipation.

I bought this book because I would be doing a lot of traveling by train while in Europe. I had a horrible feeling that if anything went wrong while traveling it would be the trains (which turned out to be a correct theory). I read through this book and it had some interesting things in it. I didn't find it that helpful because it gives a little bit of information about different locations which is great if you are using no other book but this (bad choice) but I have several books on the areas and knew everything they told me. I did find their introduction a little helpful because I hadn't been on a train in Europe since I was in high school and my parents did most of the work.
They NEVER mentioned how far in advance you have to get your tickets in France. Not knowing this put us in a situation where we ended up spending the night in an unknown city. Overall: waste of my money. You can find the tips about trains online and on youtube. Much more helpful than this book.
