This review is from: Europe by Eurail 2010: Touring Europe by Train (Europe by Eurail: How to Tour Europe by Train) (Paperback)
For the neophyte European train traveller, this is a good book. For an experienced and adventerous traveller, it comes up short. For example the coverage of Prague and Budapest is negligible. The guide could have given names, prices and ratings of sleeping accomodations close to the train stations. It did not tell us what the price range for train supllements for fast trains (Thalys, Eurostar etc) are , nor the price range for overnight sleepers on trains ( such as from Amsterdam to Copenhagen that we will be taking.
The online train timings on Rail Europe's web site is far more compelete.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written, clear directions, up to date guide by rail, May 8, 2010
I bought this book when investigating rail options for a family vacation in Europe. I thought it was well done. I liked the specific instructions for rail stations and the information to purchase ahead of time over the web, which saved us a great deal of money. It also should have mentioned that the earlier you buy tickets the cheaper they are for many rail systems (we bought for Thalys). The side trip info and how do them without a car was also useful.

2.0 out of 5 stars Full of information that will rapidly become out of date, June 28, 2011

Pending my trip by interrail I bought this book, hoping that it would give me some insights in what to see. Although this is not a complete review of the book - since we only visited western Europe. However, I find the book a great disapointment.

The book is filled with information that I find odd to have in a book called "Europe By Eurail". I do not need information on how to get to a place by other means than by train. As the title implies, the book should give information on routes by train (and other means only if there is no train), excursions using trains and routes to take. My view is that this is more of a general travel book, and subpar to the competition.

Mostly, the book contains information on some excursions that are too briefly described, too inaccurate descriptions and in general I found them uninformative. It has many tables of train times that I my opinion do not belong in a book, in a day and age where information is much more updated on the internet.

We spent two weeks on rails, and while reading the sections for each city we visited I rarely found the information came in handy. I found more accurate, extensive information elsewhere. Money is better spent on another book.
