Biography

Dave Brubeck was one of the most active and popular musicians in both the jazz and classical worlds. With a career that spanned over six decades, his experiments in odd time signatures, improvised counterpoint, polyrhythm and polytonality remain hallmarks of innovation.

Born into a musical family in Concord, California-- his two older brothers were also professional musicians--he began ... Read more in Amazon's Dave Brubeck Store

Editorial Reviews

2009 release containing the complete original album The Dave Brubeck Quartet in Europe. Recorded live in Copenhagen, it contains Brubeck's only known version of Frank Loesser's 'Wonderful Copenhagen', as well as the only performance of his own composition 'My One Bad Habit Is Falling in Love'. As a bonus, a long unavailable live performance by the 1956 Brubeck quartet playing an unusual program is added for your listening pleasure. Includes 12 page booklet. Lonehill.

5.0 out of 5 stars Owned the LP since forever June 14, 2009
Format:Audio CD
I've owned the LP version of this album for thirty years. Haven't played it for twenty (or any of my LPs) but still lug that box of vinyl around. Not to worry, these Brubeck performances are so distinct I can still recall them clearly in my head (or maybe I just played the hell out of them back in the day -- neural imprinting). I'm thrilled to find this great collection of songs finally issued on CD. Just ordered, and can't wait to drive down that 5/4 neural path again. Paul Desmond shines, Copenhagen and Tangerine are exceptional!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of My Favorite Brubeck Quartet Recordings September 30, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I still have this recording on LP believe it or not in it's original state and I've always wanted it on CD. Now I have it and what a wonderful edition as my CD version is in Stereo; my LP was in Mono and what a difference in sound! This is, without a doubt, one of the quartet's better live recordings. I'd rate it a step below the Carnegie Hall recording issued in 1963 I believe. Included on this CD is a live concert from 1956 recorded in New York somewhere. The difference in sound when compared to the Live In Europe 1958 concert is like night and day. It has it's moments but when you have Joe Morello and Eugene Wright as your rhythm section in 1958 as compared to Brubeck's old rhythm section it's a done deal. Nothing compares to Morello and Wright, not to forget Dave and Paul Desmond of course. For some reason, I've been finding more and more CD issues of the Dave Brubeck Quartet and if I don't have 'em, I buy 'em..... Too bad Sony hasn't put out Dave Brubeck's entire output! I'd sure like Tonight Only with Carmen McRae.... Hint??? By the way, I have nearly everything Mr. Brubeck has ever released.

5.0 out of 5 stars Other Unreissued Brubeck-! September 12, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I needn't use this space to further praise the long-awaited reissue (Lonehill) of this wonderful early Brubeck classic -- or the equally welcome reissue of Brubeck's JAZZ IMPRESSIONS OF THE U.S.A (Gambit) -- and, surely, the music of this justly legendary Quartet speaks eloquently for itself. So, I'll limit my comments here to simply questioning when we might expect to see the reissue of two other worthy, critically acclaimed, and inexplicably ignored (for such a popular artist!) Columbia items from the Brubeck catalog: the outstanding quartet efforts with Gerry Mulligan (in place of the departed Desmond) in top form on COMPADRES and BLUES ROOTS, both 5-star Down Beat-rated albums. (Ironically, the lesser BRAVO! BRUBECK!, also with Mulligan and recorded around the same time, has been reissued.) I'm a serious collector, and no self-respecting Brubeck 'aficionado' can be happy without these two strong entries in the Brubeck canon!

5.0 out of 5 stars In Europe Live in Copenhagen March 5 1958 March 14, 2010

The Dave Brubeck Quartet at their zenith. I'm not a good reviewer because I'm extremely biased. I have listened to Dave since I was in high school almost 50 years ago. I have all his recordings which are numerous. I love everything he does.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Jazz July 12, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Reason why I bought it was that I bought it in 1960's when I was in the collage. And, I was very much impressed at that time by the rhythm and tone.
Currently, I had a chance to remember the sound. And then I bought it as a CD.
Some people may not interested in this music. But I recommend to any body who love classic Jazz.

This CD contains some different occasion recording in the last half. That was not good quality of sound.
