5.0 out of 5 stars A wistful masterpiece September 5, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Only once every year or so do I discover an album that blows me away. (In case you're wondering, the last ones were Joanna Newsom's "Have One On Me" and Jens Lekman's "You're So Silent Jens.") Allo Darlin's "Europe" is the sound of my 2012.

Europe is more mature than Allo Darlin''s debut. (It felt wrong to use just one apostrophe there.) In particular, the lyrics sound much more heartfelt. Whereas the debut had its beautiful, emotional moments, Europe is drenched in them--almost painfully so. Never before has so much wistfulness, homesickness, longing and vulnerability been crammed into one recording. It's a big, gorgeously crafted love letter.

If you like Belle & Sebastian, Hefner, Camera Obscura, The Smiths and Jens Lekman, this album's a surefire bet. It sits right in the middle of the B&S/H/CO/TS/JL pentagram, like a little pining sacrifical lamb.

And--of course--if you dislike those bands, you'll almost certainly dislike this.

5.0 out of 5 stars another masterpiece September 4, 2012
By Dudley
Format:Audio CD
It helps to know a bit about the band's backstory to appreciate how wonderful these songs are. Elizabeth Morris--the band's lead singer, songwriter, ukelele player, and all-around awesomeness--moved to England from Australia, leaving behind her friends and family to chase an indie pop dream. After releasing her first album with Allo Darlin', their amazing self-titled album, they toured europe where they suffered one calamity after another: a van that kept breaking down, shows that went unpromoted, unreliable soundboard, and so on. That tour inspired this album, which traces themes of finding beauty despite trying circumstances, missing one's friends, wondering about the meaning of one's romantic relationships, but mostly an unabashed love of indie pop.

Take a listen to Tallulah and you should know whether this might be for you. It's just Elizabeth and her uke, and some of the most amazing, heartfelt lyrics you can imagine. To paraphrase John Peel, I can't plan to talk afterwards, because I get all dewy-eyed every time I hear it. Remember when music used to seem like a bit of magic? That's what this album means to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than their already great debut February 25, 2013

I'm absolutely in love with this album. It's melodious, full of emotion, bright jangling guitars and the vocals are gorgeous. Perfect album to give to your boyfriend (or girlfriend), to listen to on a lazy Sunday afternoon, or to cheer you up when you're feeling down. I had it constantly on repeat in 2012.
