Book Description

May 28, 2006
This beautiful volume features 103 superb pieces of European furniture dating from the Renaissance to the late nineteenth century from the collection of The Metropolitan Museum. Examples by many outstanding European designer-craftsmen, such as Andre-Charles Boulle, Thomas Chippendale, David Roentgen, and Karl Friedrich Schinkel, are included, as well as important works by unknown makers. In detailed texts, which incorporate new archival and technical information, the authors discuss the history and significance of each piece. An introduction by Danielle Kisluk-Grosheide presents the history of the Museum's distinguished furniture collection. Colour reproductions of the furniture are presented in overall views and many details, all of which were made specifically for this book. Three hundred fifty-eight additional colour images are included on a CD-ROM at the back of the book.

This review is from: European Furniture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Highlights of the Collection (Hardcover)
Given that this is a publication emanating from the Metropolitan Museum, one can make the following assumptions: that the quality of the printing, photography, commentary and items under discussion would be of superior quality. Certainly, all these criteria are fully met in this beautiful book on furniture.

The Metropolitan Museum has a large and distinguished furniture collection, accumulated over a long period of time. Some of the major pieces were donated by serious furniture collectors such as Irwin Untermeyer and the Wrightsmans. 103 items, ranging from chairs, tables, chests, frames, cabinets and so forth are illustrated and comprehensively described. Some of the pieces are delicately elegant, others are heavy in style. Certainly all are top quality examples. There is an accompanying DVD illustrating further aspects of the furniture featured in the book.

While I cannot claim to be any particular expert in the area, I have derived much pleasure in studying the varied styles and examples of the furniture as presented. Strongly recommended.
