This review is from: European Miniatures in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Metropolitan Museum of Art Series) (Hardcover)
This is a catalogue of the European miniature collection in the Metropolitan Museum. It is written by Graham Reynolds, a renowned authority on this subject. There are 85 full color illustrations at the beginning of the book (highlights of the collection) followed by 399 duotone images of the whole assemblage. Each of these are briefly described by Graham Reynolds.
The printing quality of this volume is up the the normally high standard of Metropolitan publications and at the present asking price of $20 this book is a bargain. I compared the miniatures with those appearing in another of Reynold's catalogues, the far more expensive "Sixteenth and Seventeenth Century Miniatures in the Queen's Collection". Perhaps it is unfair to contrast the Metropolitan with the world's finest, but one soon realises that the Metropolitan's examples are generally of lesser quality and interest. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the book and recommend it to miniature enthusiasts.

This book has excellent full-color photos and good description of the pieces.
Don't let the cover image mislead you, though, most of the miniatures in the book are from after the 16th century. |
