The European Organ, 1450-1850,
By Mark Rich (Ann Arbor, Michigan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The European Organ: 1450-1850 (Hardcover)
This is an excellent source of information in preparing for masters or doctoral oral exams in organ. Peter Williams discusses the nationalistic differences in organ design and construction as the pipe organ came to be what it is today. Many examples of stop lists, features, and specific builders are discussed. This book needs to be in print again! It is absolutely necessary.

A lot of praise has been given to Williams' work in this book over the last 50 years, and it is all deserved. Comprehensive and passionate, Williams' work is, of course, scholarly, but it is reinforced by his practical experiences of observing and playing hundreds of historical instruments.A big book: 336 pp on heavy stock, 2.75 pounds. With dustjacket. 99 b&w photo plates. Glossary of Stop Names. 29 pp of bibliographic information. Index.
