Editorial Reviews

Sambassadeur started as the world of DIY's answer ABBA in the year 2003. They lead an explosive Swedish pop movement which achieved overnight indie fame (thanks to the MP3 spreading kids!) and reached the sales charts. The band has flirted with lo-fi indie pop, Velvet Underground and The Jesus and Mary Chain in the past, but with each subsequent album their sound has grown and matured. The 2nd album "Migration" was very luxurious sounding - almost dancey - compared to the selftitled debut ("....finds success in revealing its heart through upbeat and engaging pop music" Popmatters).

On "European" the transformationis complete. It's the grand, classic, orchestrated album they've always dreamed of making. Sambassadeur are no longer secret stars. This is The extrovert album from Sambassadeur. May it stay with you forever.

Good album. It seems a little cliche with the pseudo-retro sound, but I can't really complain. It's upbeat, peppy, and fun. I had this album in my wishlist for almost a year before I finally pulled the trigger but I'm glad I did. It's real music with real instruments. It's not something I'd recommend to my friends who are into The White Stripes or Seether, but if you like "feel-good" music with female vocals, you can't go wrong with this one.

The most striking feature of this talented pop band is the off-hand (yet sensual) vocal delivery style of lead singer Anna Persson. Sambassadeur has evolved nicely from classic "lo-fi" pop of the self-titled debut to the more sophisticated (but not over-polished or over-produced) sound of 2010's "European." The best description of the Sambassadeur sound is that they sound as if Ivy's Dominique Durand were singing lead vocals on an Arthur Lee/Love album circa 1967.

This is the best, most sustained effort to date from this band. The CD opens with an awesome one-two punch of "Stranded" followed by "Days," both of which should have been maga-hits. Some moments are folkier. Some moments are poppier. But, overall, it's very comfortable listening, instantly feeling like slipping on a favorite pair of old blue jeans.

Fronted by the charmed Anna Persson, Sambassadeur recalls the frothy songcraft of fellow Swedes ABBA. That's where the similarities end. What sets Sambassadeur apart from its dancing-queen forebear is the addition of light orchestration, the concentration on Persson's breathy solo vocal, the wistful tone, and the empty-beach sound of the band. The addition of string quartet accompaniment gives a conservatory quotient to this set of late-afternoon Nordic novellas. Both bands may bump through love notes, but where ABBA did it with glitz, echo, and sticky choruses, Sambassadeur instead draws the listener in with Fifth-Dimensional, simple confessionals.
