Excellent Primer to European Football,
By A Customer
This review is from: European football, a fan's handbook - the rough guide (Paperback)
Covers every major club in every European city. Trophies, players, great moments all covered in very readable style. Excellent tips on transportation, lodging and dining. Perhaps the most interesting section is the "Ultra Culture", detailing the hooligan aspects of the respective teams and cities. In other words, where not to go. Fantastic reading. Can't wait for the next edition

A fantastic introduction to the world of European football,
By vs146@columbia.edu (New York City) - See all my reviews
This review is from: European football, a fan's handbook - the rough guide (Paperback)
I was interested in trying to bone up on my soccer so I could converse intelligently with my relatives in Italy, and this book fit the bill perfectly. Written most directly for use by English-speaking fans who might actually travel to see the powerhouse teams covered, the book is still a fantastic primer on the history of the clubs, and the current gossip as of time of publication (1998.) If you're new to soccer and looking for a little insight into the world of Europe's beautiful game, or just want to read a comprehensive overview of the field that's not afraid to voice a strong opinion or two, this book will not disappoint.

A PHENOMENAL GUIDE TO EUROPEAN SOCCER CLUBS,
By A Customer
This review is from: European Football: The Rough Guide (Rough Guides) (Paperback)
I purchased this book with the hopes of reading something different than the normal coaching manuals that seem to take up so much space. Boy was I thrilled to see an actual book that tells you EVERYTHING you want/need to know about the top clubs from virtually every nation in Europe. From where to buy tickets to how to get to the stadium, this book is worth every penny.

Even though this book was published several years ago, it's still very up to date and an excellent resource for planning the soccer fanatics trip of a lifetime. My son and I love soccer and especially enjoy "European Football." We are still making arrangements for next summer, but this book has helped us plan our trip in such a way that we can see 14 games in 5 countries in three weeks. We couldn't have planned our trip without the use of this guide. We will be able to book our hotels, find great restaurants, and other places to go (museums, concert halls, historical sites) to make our trip a great cultural experience. We are excited and grateful for this helpful resource to take along with us on the trip of a life time!

Excellent, one-of-a-kind book, could stand more detail,

This review is from: European football, a fan's handbook - the rough guide (Paperback)
The irreplacable book for the travelling football fan. I would like to see some more detail (getting tickets can still be a bit confusing even with the directions in the book), and stadia maps would be helpful for deciding where to sit. Perhaps these problems have been corrected in the 2nd edition. But still an excellent book, and besides, where else are you going to go for this information? There's nothing else like it. Well worth the money even if you only use it once or twice.

If you're thinking of traveling to Europe to catch any games, you must get this book. Not only will it help get about town to the match but inspire you to go catch a match, even if it's a lower division club like FC Paris. :)

As a primer to travel to various soccer grounds and cities in Europe this is a great book. Some of the choices though are odd and I found from experience some very out of date. Maybe all this book needs is a good factchecker.

Non Fiction,

This review is from: European Football: The Rough Guide (Rough Guides) (Paperback)
The Rough Guides are really meant to be tourist type publications, and in general, this book is. There is a bit of information about soccer in there as well, when talking about the teams. It focuses on the bigger money soccer playing countries, teams and stadiums and how to get there, where to stay, and how to get the odd beer while you are there.

This book gives great insight into the history of the sport in Europe and also into each countries fans. One of its best charicteristics is that it both serves as a good travel reference and as an interesting read.

this is a WONDERFUL book. an easy-to-read informative little package crammed with pertinent information on major european football locales, as well as gems on lesser known clubs...all written with a dry, at times hilarious narrative tone.
