On this side of the pond, we have little to no exposure to the Eurovision Song Contest. My first time watching was in 1984, while stationed in Germany, and I've been hooked ever since. Many great songs came out of this competition, but few ever made it to our shores. This album gives a brief, but sketchy, look at the contest over the years. Many of the songs included were not winners, but were worthy inclusions anyway. Several of the songs were ones I had heard, but had no idea they had been part of this contest. Nonetheless, for Yanks like me, it was fascinating listening.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Tremendous Compilation Eurovision 2CD, June 2, 2000
This review is from: Eurovision Volume 1 (40 Original Eurovision Hits) (Audio CD)
This was my second Eurovision double CD purchase. This one is particularly special, because it contains so many songs that are rarely featured on other compilations, i.e. "Amsterdam," "Mata Hari" and "Love Isn't Love." I think that this is a great compilation that is a very fair representation of Eurovision as there are many countries included, although many of the songs are sung in English as opposed to the language in which they were originally sung. There are some quirky Dutch songs included which are just about the campiest entries I have ever heard. Listen to the first CD, and you will hear what I'm talking about. All the classics are here too. I strongly recommend this CD-set to any and all Eurovision fans. I've only seen the contest once in my life, but I became hooked, especially because my favorite group of all time is ABBA, and well you know the rest... I encourage everyone who has bought this CD to write in with a review! It's a trip to read about everyone's favorites. Happy listening!

This CD is good enough if somebody is interested in Eurovision song contest and some of the best songs ever in its history....Altough some great songs are missing(Diva-Israel,Dinle-Turkey,Where are you-UK etc.) it's still worth to get it....Especially the winner songs of 60s and 70s are great...You'll like it!

4.0 out of 5 stars What to listen to at home on your own., February 8, 2000
This review is from: Eurovision Volume 1 (40 Original Eurovision Hits) (Audio CD)
'The Story of Eurovision' is a somewhat over ambitious title for a CD containing 40 songs from a contest spanning over 40 years, and probably containing in excess of 800 songs in total. 'A Story' or even 'A bit of a Story' is probably more acurate.

The accompanying leaflet gives a little info - group, title, country, year and position of most; but not all songs; but who cares. I had forgotten Carola's earlier attempt years before she stormed to victory. Alice and Battiato's 1984 attempt had gone from my mind completely. Complimenting these lesser known goodies are some tragic efforts best left unheard and buried in a very deep hole. Good memories of the year Sonia should have won. I blame Malta! Great CD, well worth every penny.

4.0 out of 5 stars Euro cheese at it's best, November 3, 2002
This review is from: Eurovision Volume 1 (40 Original Eurovision Hits) (Audio CD)
A definite buy for all Eurovision fanatics though not really for newcomers to the genre.

Includes some of the cheesiest tunes from across Europe. My current favourite being "Eres tu" by Mocedades, a song I had never heard until playing this CD.

Enjoy!!

This is a most valuable gift for a friend you will visit in Europe. Whatever the country, if your friend is between 25 and 65 years old, he will appreciate this record of "l'amour est bleu" or "poupée de son"... and other famous melodies.
