Editorial Reviews

The 2012 Eurovision Song Contest was held in Baku, Azerbaijan, and proved to be a huge victory for Sweden, whose entry 'Euphoria' by Loreen won by a landslide. This 2-Disc CD contains all 42 entries, including "Waterline" by Jedward and the United Kingdom's song, "Love Will Set You Free" by Engelbert Humperdinck.

Wow. How is that I've never heard of the Eurovision Song Contest before? These songs are amazing! I wish we had something like this in America! This particular year has hours of great music! Some of my favorites were the voter's favorites: Sweden & Russia, but also the entry from FYR Macendona (What a fantastic song/singer! The Eurovision song contest allows Americans to get euro-music not usually available on this side of the pond! Worth the price of admission! Eurovision Song Contest Baku 2012

$40.00 for a CD? Is Amazon.com insane? I bought the exact same CD from the UK Amazon for half this price - including shipping from the UK to the USA. As for the music: The Eurovision Song Contest has seen much better music in the recent past: 2004 ,2005, 2006, 2007...etc. With the exception of few songs, there's not much that will remain in the audience's memory. The highlights among the 42 entries are Serbia's "Nije Ljubav Stvar," Croatia's "Nebo," Bosnia's "Korake Ti Znam," Norway's "Stay," and Sweden's "Euphoria." Next week, we will find out who will win the Baku edition of the Contest. Good luck to all.

The "Eurovision Song Contest: Baku 2012" is a two cd set that contains 21 songs on each set. Most of the songs represent different countries in both Western and Eastern Europe. "Euphoria" by Loreen, "Beautiful Song" by Anmary, and "Stay" by Tooji are some of my favorite songs in this collection. However, there are also so many other good songs that are included in this compilation.
At the time of this writing, Amazon US does not yet have the full track listing to this compilation. However, the United Kingdom Amazon, Germany Amazon, and France Amazon all have complete track listings to both cds. The "Eurovision Song Contest: Baku 2012" is best for those who are curious to hear a sampling of pop songs from Continental Europe.

We had the stroke of fortune to be in traveling in Europe during the Eurovision 2012 contest. We delighted in being able to catch the semi-finals and finals live. We reveled in the earnest kitschiness of the event - best exemplified by its ardent Azerbaijani hosts, gamely serving up read-by-numbers English and often cringe-inducing attempts at folksiness (reaching its apex when they butchered the hallowed Eurovision touchstone, 'Waterloo').

To relive those moments of simple (and perhaps guilty) pleasures, we bought this CD. It features all 40+ songs from the proceedings in Baku. It really is a fun event to watch. And, you can learn some things about these different countries in their approach to the event. Some of the music is really great - Swedish winner Loreen's winning track, 'Euphoria,' will stand with any song. It alone tells you a lot about Sweden's impressive multi-culturalism. Lorine Talhaoui is Swedish-born and raised, but is the offspring of Moroccan immigrants. The song also speaks to Sweden's professional approach to the event and to their clear attempts to compete to win. Euphoria's composer, Thomas Gustafsson (a.k.a., Thomas G:son) is - as noted on Wikipedia - "best known for the 58 songs he has written for national finals of eight different countries for...Eurovision." If you go with G:son, you're going for the win.

You'd think every country would set out to win, but that's clearly not the case. The winner's burden is to sponsor the following year's event. And, with the Euro crisis being what it is, some countries clearly looked to avoid the prize. How else to explain Ireland offering up Jedward for a second year? Or the UK going with old chestnut Engelbert Humperdinck?

The Eurovision Song Contest is an interesting and unique bag of music. This CD wasn't as bad as some people claim it is. Quite contrary. What helps is that the music in the CD is arranged so you don't listen to the same type of beats and sounds 5 times in a row. When you compare it to some of today's newest pop music, the difference isn't off by much. All in all, definitely worth buying. My suggestion is to wait for the price to start dropping before you buy it. That's what I did. I waited a few weeks and it was worth it.
