Solid humidifier at a reasonable price,

This review is from: Eva-Mist edv-2500i Ultra Sonic Humidifier with Digital Humidistat and Nightlight with 7 Colors (Health and Beauty)
I researched humidifiers extensively and wanted to get one with a humidistat. The humidistat on this thing works reasonably well, but I've found that most humidistats built into the devices are not quite as accurate as those that are stand alone. But all-in-all, it seems to greatly increase the humidity of my bedroom and shuts off when the desired level is reached.
The electronic push-button features on this are easy to use and provide a reasonable array of features (e.g. timer, humidity control, volume of mist, etc.). This was important because I didn't want my humidifier to just run until the water went out. The night light colors are nice and sort of cool looking. Also, the unit is very easy to fill and does not leak once you put the cap on and turn the upside down tank rightside up. The mist is fine and so far, I have not had any residue or build up with using tap water and the filter (I know this doesn't get rid of germs in the water, but oh well). Finally, this unit is very quiet. Outside of the occassional soft gurgle of water, it makes almost no noise. The only negatives are that it comes with two packs of material in the tank which I couldn't figure out - don't know if those are used as part of the filter or just part of the packaging and the directions don't mention them at all. The other thing is that it once started beeping loudly when I took off the tank while the unit was on (almost like a smoke alarm), but went quiet as soon as I put the tank back on the unit.

I have found this product to be barely worth the closeout price I paid for it. The first day I had it, I put it in my bedroom on a bookshelf and left it on automatic. A few hours later I came back to a completely water-soaked (and thus ruined) bookshelf top with water everywhere, including all over the unit. The windows were slick with condensation. The air was thick like a hot day in Houston; you could smell the humidity. It was still not registering the 55% humidity it was attempting to reach. I realize the instructions say not to place the unit on furniture, however, if anyone has an idea of how to place an object two feet off the floor without the use of furniture, I'm all ears. After I cleaned that up and set it to 45% and put the amount of moisture produced to the lowest setting, it seems to do a relatively good job of keeping the air at about 45%, though it never reaches that level in its own estimation. At this point I thought it was just inaccurate and would have to adjust accordingly. I moved it to a somewhat waterproof window sill. At that location with those settings I didn't run into any moisture issues. I had to turn off the virulent pulsating multi-colored nightlight that it has, as I cannot imagine anyone sleeping through it. I assumed that would be the end of the problems. That is, until it ran out of water.
I woke up in the pre-dawn of the next day to a horrifying screech I initially thought was the fire alarm. Instead I found it to be the humidifier, gently informing me that it was out of water. I looked for a way to turn off this "feature". None. Instruction manual? Nothing. More on that later, but my other humidifiers do a lovely job of just turning off and blinking when they run out of water. Why on Earth any engineer thought a fire alarm level of alert was necessary is beyond me. The auto-humidity feature itself makes no sense, as you can set it to automatically adjust to whatever percentage humidity you want (though it will never be accurate in doing so). I have yet to notice any improvement for the mist being ionized. Another problem I have found is that the unit is quite loud. It bubbles and gurgles regularly, and the unit makes a fairly loud buzz when operating. There is also a constant dripping noise as the mist in the outlet condenses and drops. Keep in mind, this is on the lowest setting. Luckily I am a deep sleeper; I cannot imagine this being tolerable to anyone who is a light sleeper. Finally, the manual that is provided is lean at best and insulting at worst. A whopping eight half-full pages long, my favorite part, by far, is the troubleshooting section. Here are some of the problems and sole suggestions provided: "Humidifier does not operate - Power cable not plugged in - plug in power cable", "The power light is on, but there is no mist visible - No water in water tank - fill tank with water", and "Very tight tank cap - Over tightened". It is in every way the total opposite of the Venta humidifier I have, which is quiet, efficient, and accurate. The units initially cost the same amount, so I can understand why this one is on deep discount and apparently no longer produced (I can't find it on the manufacturer's website). The only reason it's worth anything is the deeply discounted price, but I will replace it as soon as it is fiscally feasible to do so.

The Eva-Mist humidifier arrived in a timely fashion and as advertised. I wanted to use this to humidify a medium sized green house, but only during certain hours of the day. I setup up a timer that controlled the power to this unit only to discover that once the electronics have powered down, the unit is reset and will not automatically turn back on when power is restored. Something you might want to know if you are looking to use this in an unconventional application. Otherwise it works fine and keeps the room regulated to the value I have set. When selecting the correct unit for your needs keep in mind, The dryer your climate the more it will be used thus, you will want a model with a larger water storage container.
