Editorial Reviews

Review

"A loving look at both her life and her work, with stunning photographs that beautifully showcase Zeisel's creations." - BookPage

"It is a pleasure to find a book that combines elegant design and readability with thorough research, especially when the subject is the fascinating 105-year life of ceramic designer Eva Zeisel.... A beautifully illustrated survey of the life and work of an important designer, useful to both collectors and readers interested in 20th-century modernism." -Library Journal

"At once scholarly and intimate, this book honors the unique life and artistic achievements of Eva Zeisel.... Her designs are photographed with magical light by Brent Brolin and chronicled by Kirkham and her co-authors, Pat Moore and Pirco Wolfframm, who also became devoted friends and scholars of all things Zeisel. Whether emerging out of darkness or basking against a warm, bright glow, each piece pops with boldness of contour and subtlety of surface."- Ellen Lupton, Designers & Books

"A remarkable tribute to one of the 20th century's most adept ceramicists and designers of housewares." - San Jose Mercury News

An important book on a major figure of 20th century design. Great biographical information, and photos never seen before of Eva Zeisel's work. A beautiful edition to add to your library of books on design.

This is a major contribution to the scholarship on Eva Zeisel, a 20th Century master of form. As her student, noted Pratt industrial design alumnus James Fulton said at her 95th birthday celebration, "Eva has lived through all the modern movements and has been moved by none of them." She transcended ideology and her work was loved not only by the design elite but also by ordinary consumers - a rare accomplishment. She encountered her tableware in households all over the world, as she said, "Like so many well-behaved grandchildren."

She was a mentor and exemplar to generations of designers, including each term of my History of ID students at Art Center College of Design. As it happens, tonight we will be covering Eva's work in class again, a new group will fall in love with her, and I will show them this book. Along with "Eva Zeisel: Designer for Industry," this is an indispensable record of her work for scholars, designers, and anyone who loves design.

This is the best book of its genre. I highly recommend it. It is beautiful, just like Eva's designs. It is thoughtful and well-written. And it is good design, in its own right.

I asked for this for Christmas 2013 as I inherited my mother's Eva Z. Museum White china and have been adding to it ever since. She had a setting for 10 that is now 12 and I've added assorted completer sets as I found them. This book will be handed down with my china to my daughter one day...
