Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Formalized methods of assessment help school library media specialists to best allocate resources, justify the need for additions or improvements, and demonstrate fulfillment of goals and objectives. This comprehensive guide provides a variety of evaluative tools, as well as bibliographies of relevant materials and supportive figures. The introductory chapter outlines the necessity of evaluation, segueing into a very basic section titled "Getting Started." Further chapters systematically demonstrate how to evaluate personnel, physical facilities, technology, and collections. Tools include rubrics, checklists, worksheets, and comparative figures. Sprinkled throughout the text are lists of relevant Web sites and further-reading suggestions. The appendix provides a state-by-state guide to evaluation tools along with addresses for obtaining these documents. This informative and well-designed resource should have a place on any media center's professional shelf.

From Booklist

Although most school library media specialists (SLMS) would agree that evaluation of their library media centers is very important, they would also admit that they often lack the required know-how to do it. Everhart responds to this dilemma by looking at methodology and assessment instruments and then presenting a variety of ways to evaluate curriculum, collections, facilities, technology, and usage. Sample forms take up much of the text, with Everhart also providing benchmark national statistics and summaries of pertinent research. Particularly useful are her chapters on facilities and technology, as they will help professionals evaluate their current situations and furnish them with excellent questions that will help in the design of new facilities or the acquisition of new technology. Additional resources are appended to each chapter. This much-needed resource will be welcomed by many SLMS and faculty teaching prospective SLMS, but the material may intimidate rank beginners as it demands some background knowledge of or experience with evaluation.
