Paediatric intensive care is a relatively new subspecialty, but has developed rapidly and has become the standard of care for the critically ill or critically injured child. This book is a readily usable resource that helps the user initiate the key medical interventions that maintain and protect the child until he/she reaches a paediatric intensive care unit. It presents the "first degree" principles including the critically ill child presented in terms of (impending) system failure, the initial encounter, medical management and stabilization and transport of the child. Chapters are organized by organ systems in the order of priority used in approaching the critically ill child, including: brief pathophysiology; clinical presentation; evaluation and therapy; then system by system: antibiotics and drugs; CP arrest, near-drowning/asphyxia, post resuscitation care; and transport of patients.
