Coming off the overwhelmingly distorted and dark industrial-rock of "Colossus", "Evanescence" is something of a turning point in Scorn's career. Mick and Nicholas softened the harsh industrial element and started incorporating several other influences from techno to experimental guitar rock. Upon first contact, some songs may seem like unfinished, tuneless sketches, however, the melodies and hooks emerge after a couple of listens and make this album a uniquely hypnotic and mind-opening listening experince. Nicholas' evocative vocals tend to get lost under the multi-layered arrangements, but this makes the music even more mystical. Mick's stoical mid-tempo rhythms run throughout the whole album, supported by fine bass lines. Guitarist (and Harris collaborator) James Plotkin adds some very strange, elusive angles of his own. Best tracks here are the aptly titled "Silver rain fell", the subliminal "Light trap", and "Exodus", which really conjures the image of a long journey across a bleak, unfriendly landscape. "Evanescence" is among the strongest post-rock albums of the '90s, it's also the most consistent and interesting effort by Scorn.

This album is the finest work of Scorn's entire existence. The bass is excellent, the samples are strategically placed, the guitar is perfect the music is simply wonderful. I would definitely recommend this music to anyone interested in contemplating infinity and existence.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!! Scorn at its best, May 9, 2004

This is where Scorn finally found its niche and put out a masterpiece that put earlier works to shame. Moving further away from the metal/industrial sound that typified earlier Scorn CDs; Evanescence took Harris down a much more experimental road that allowed his musical talent to shine. As always the vocals on this album are great and loaded with heavy amounts of distortion that make one feel as if in a dream. Silver Rain Fell is by far the best track on the album (but the album as a whole adds to the depth of the song and helps to make it stand out). This album is not only the best work put out by Scorn but also an example of how the band (Mick Harris) continues to grow and redefine itself. Long gone are the days of Napal Death (whose member went on to form both Scorn and Godflesh).

This is by far the best release from Scorn,I highly recommend it.I have listened to this cd countless times over the years and never tire from hearing it.A note to the review by "computer boy",it's not bad labeling,it's you not paying attention to what you were getting.Scorn existed years before the band Evanescence ever did,and the Scorn release of Evanescence came out at least a decade before the band was heard of.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite by Scorn, January 11, 2009
This review is from: Evanescence (Audio CD)
This is the 3rd full length disc by Scorn. It's one of the last full length discs to feature Nick Bullen. Too bad really- since Bullen and Mick Harris finally found a voice. Vae Solis featured guitar work of Justin Broadrick- which explains the huge resemblance to Godflesh. As cool as Vae Solis was- it felt like just another Godflesh record. (Which is odd in on itself- since this is the line up that gave us the first half of Napalm Death's "Scum"!) Colussus was less heavy but more dub oriented record that relied heavily on samples than anything else. Evanescence feels like the next logical phase in Scorn's evolution from metal. James Plotkin (OLD) lends a hand playing some psychedelic spacey guitar that feels like another instrument all together. The drones of heavy dub and the eerie qualities of the previous are still very much apparent on this disc- what seperates it from previous work is it's focus and cohesiveness. The vocals while sparse are put to effective use. Gone is the angst and bile of the old days- instead the vocals are sung through various echo and delay effects. An enjoyable disc for those into experimental/dark ambient music- and certainly leaps ahead of it's time...

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the rarest Gems in electronic music, September 3, 2004

This review is from: Evanescence (Audio CD)
I have listened to this album more than any man can bare. It was spinning all the time when I was a young lad. I still return every now and then and still get blown away by the atmospheric tribal ambient drum n bass this album produces. Mix that with Nick Bullen's vocals and bass lines and you have one of the rarest albums that leave you completely in awe. A lot of the more experimental psychedelic musicians have been influenced by this album. As is the case with this album in remix. No one can come close to Scorn as this was the album at their peak of collaborative efforts. We can only hope that another group of musicans can come to express the unknown, infinity, time, light and darkness as well as Scorn.

4.0 out of 5 stars How to discover a new band..., January 10, 2006
This review is from: Evanescence (Audio CD)
At first I thought that I was getting an Evanescene album, but realized that it was not Evanescene after listening to it. I really do enjoy this band's music, a band which I have never heard of before. Talk about an interesting way to find a new band!

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute masterpiece, July 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Evanescence (Audio CD)
"Evanescence" is, without a doubt, their best album. It may take a little time to get used to the sound, because the hypnotic drum loops are way up in the mix, while the haunting vocals are often buried under layers of sinister samples. "Exodus", the finest track, is even danceable and easily could have been an successful single. "Evanescence" marked the highpoint in the career of this unusual band, unfortunately it was the last great album Scorn released.

5.0 out of 5 stars disembodied vocals, June 14, 2003
This review is from: Evanescence (Audio CD)
And a digeridoo!! I have to admit that I had od'd on this recording years ago because I listened to it all the time, but now I can listen to it again.
and then I tried some of the earlier works which I couldn't believe came from the same artist. I hated them!
I love Gyral also.
