4.0 out of 5 stars Very original, and hard to put down in the middle
The Evangeline Manuscript is the only novel I have ever read which combines time travel and the historical Jesus. That combination alone makes the book worth reading. However, in addition, the author has a wonderful ability to portray everyday life at the time of the Roman empire; and the characters are fully-developed, and they are people whom the reader will care...

1.0 out of 5 stars Saddening Disappointment
I am loathe to criticize the work of a fellow libertarian. I have tried to put it off, tried to avoid it altogether, but I can't keep doing this with an easy conscience. Purported to be the "true" story of a time-machine that sends the protagonist to the time of Christ, most of the heroine's adventurous journeys in the ancient world described in "The...

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great book!, November 25, 1998

I absolutely loved "The Evangeline Manuscript" and am in fact re-reading it already. It's not only because the heroine is a Scottish-descended Southern college student, it's because there is a whopping great story, a superb cast of characters, and a fascinating "what if" message. I highly recommend this book, to everyone. But beware: Closed minds will object.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Age story with profound implications for today, November 30, 1998

This book is wonderful! It is a New Age, science fiction, historical fiction, adventure story with a strong woman heroine. I have difficulty believing a mere man could have done such a credible job portraying a woman. I strongly recommend this book. Pssst, women: Give this to your male friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars This book is fascinating! I loved it and highly recommend it, November 21, 1998

This is a great book. It is a combination of New Age, religious, science fiction, historical fiction, adventure, romance, philosophical, and perhaps still other genres. The attention to detail in daily living alone is worth the price. But the story is enthralling. I highly recommend it. Women should appreciate the female lead; men should appreciate, well, everything. It's superb.

I am loathe to criticize the work of a fellow libertarian. I have tried to put it off, tried to avoid it altogether, but I can't keep doing this with an easy conscience. Purported to be the "true" story of a time-machine that sends the protagonist to the time of Christ, most of the heroine's adventurous journeys in the ancient world described in "The Evangeline Manuscript" read like little more than a framework for the author's sexual fantasies. There is no depth, no genuine feast for the soul, no truly spiritual exploration, not even in the small part of the story, near the end, where the heroine finally encounters Jesus. Here my disappointment in this tale became nearly unbearable, as the author creates a Jesus in his own image and a gospel to his own taste.

The book is not totally bereft of truths, and the author's epilogue attempts to bring his story back up to some level of authenticity, from a spiritual standpoint, but even this seems like a last-minute sop to an uneasy conscience. It is not enough.

One day, Chandler will see Jesus as He really is. It will be quite a surprise. (And no, Walker, He's not angry with you. He is amused, albeit a bit sadly. I can only paraphrase it by saying, "You ain't seen nothing yet!")
