This book puts an end to all the POOP!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Evans Guide for Housetraining Your Dog (Hardcover)
This has been one the the most useful book I've read on housetraining your dog. Micheal Evans makes it so easy to understand how to properly housetrain your loveable fuzz ball. I love the way he explains the psychology of how to quickly and easily let your dog know who's the boss (Alpha), and how to get your dog to "do his business" where you want it to be done. He also has a great chapter on feeding schedules and what your dog should be eating and avoiding. I was able to use advice from his book the same day I bought it and got positive results that very same day. This is a "must read" and "must use" book for those who want to housetrain their dogs the right way!

This book should go home with EVERY new puppy!!,

This review is from: The Evans Guide for Housetraining Your Dog (Hardcover)
Of all the dog housebreaking books on the market, this one is far and away one of the best. It is written in Job Michael Evans' usual manner...intelligent, without boring the first-time dog owner with technical jargon; lighthearted and funny (and we need all the humor we can get when housebreaking!); and best of all...he realizes that REAL people with JOBS buy puppies!! Some authors expect the average dog owner to put their pup out every two or three hours - and suggest that you're a failure as an owner if you don't!!! When I was teaching dog training classes, this book was 'required reading'. My dogs are usually housebroken in about 2 weeks with his methods. Start with a healthy puppy from a responsible, caring breeder, add this book and a great Puppy Kindergarten trainer...and you'll get through the rough parts of puppy raising with minimal stress - and minimal damage to your carpets!! :-) I own, exhibit and occasionally breed Rhodesian Ridgebacks - and I send this book home with every puppy-buyer a few weeks before the puppy goes it's new home.

Evans knows what he's talking about!,

As a breeder of large-type Airedale terriers, I am constantly asked for good sources of house training material. This book is it! It is very easy to understand, and Evans' topics are readily applicable to novice trainers as well as "experts". He injects humor into his writing, and gives excellent examples, as well as the reasoning behind why dogs do what they do. He correctly places the blame, if you will, of a dog's poor behavior where it most often lies--with the owner. He then corrects the owner by using common-sense reasoning and provides the support for training success. Pertinent topics covered include submissive urinating and unwanted leg lifting. His experience as a dog breeder shows through; his experience as a dog trainer and his program should give even the most inexperienced dog owner effective results.

Not only does this book explain how to train your dog, it explains WHY you should do it this way. After reading this book I thought about every "untrainable" dog I have known and could see the mistakes that the owners had made in their attempts to train them. We are getting a new puppy soon, and am delighted to have this information to guide me.

Most effective house-training book I've seen,

This review is from: The Evans Guide for Housetraining Your Dog (Hardcover)
Clearest, easiest, most effective house-training book I've seen. I had a lot of trouble house-training my dog: it was my first dog, and a shelter puppy, plus I had a roommate trying to housetrain a dog of his own and we didn't see eye-to-eye on how to do housetraining. Difficult situation: it dragged on for months, with ruined carpets etc. I picked up this book, and I swear resolved the situation very quickly after that. Good stuff.

If you follow this method, it's flawless. I've recommended this book to no less than 25 people, and no one has said it doesn't work. It's short, to the point, and if you consistantly follow it, you will have a housetrained dog in no time.

When I bought my puppy (my first one ever!) I was excited to get him home and play. The breeder was great and had already pad trained him. So the first couple of days he was going inside on the pads. Well I got too confident and allowed him "the run of the house" during the day and crate trained him at night. What a rude awakening! I agree that I should have been more prepared for what was to come. Well needless to say my puppy had several accidents and the first couple of days were spent cleaning up mess after mess. I then began searching on the internet for ways to train a dog to go outside. I read blog after blog and it seemed that everyone had a different way. I must admit that I was extremely frustrated after trying suggestion after suggestion with no luck.
So I decided to buy this book and see if it would work because I was tired and desperate. I laughed when I saw the cover because that was totally me! LOL. Anyhow I downloaded the ebook immediately on my PC laptop and read the entire book cover to cover within one day. It offers practical, sound, and knowledgeable advice on how to properly house train your dog whether it's a puppy or an older dog. Evans really knows what he's talking about. I had results within 5 days! I'm serious if you follow what he says you will do great! I followed the ACCESS plan. Which means A=Alpha (you) C=confinement C=correction E=establish S=schedule S=selection (dog food). I began to look my dog in the eye to establish myself as the alpha. I did not allow my dog to run freely while he was out of his crate. I kept him on a leash with me at all times that way when i caught my dog in the act I could immediately correct him (correcting a dog after the fact is pointless). I confined him in his crate whenever needed. I established a feeding schedule and walking/exercise schedule. I selected a premium dog food that allowed my dog to have firmer stools and not have to go as often. Started this on Monday and by Thursday he was coming to me when he had to go outside = ]

I purchased this book almost ten years ago on the advise of a friend. It was the smartest doggy-related purchase I ever made other than getting my actual dog (who was free, but that's another story). I followed the advice in this book to the letter and I am happy to report that my dog will still pee on command after all these years. Who cares if Fido can roll over or give you a high five? Having a dog that will take care of his business when you tell him is the best "trick" you will EVER teach your pup.
This book lets you talk to your dog/puppy the way it's mother would and makes house-training a snap. My little guy was completely housebroken in a matter of a couple of days and if you follow the author's training exactly as presented I am confident you will have the same results. It is nice and easy for your dog. It is nice and easy for you (after a few days of complete vigilance) and the lessons learned last a lifetime (well, ten years and counting anyway). As I recall we were traveling and visiting friends while I was housebreaking my dog so he was in unfamiliar territory and it STILL worked like a charm. Do yourself and your puppy a favor and buy this book!

Having Problems Housetraining Your Dog??,

Checked this book out first from my local library. Was so impressed with the advise in it that I bought it. Clear easy to follow training advise. Also an explanation of WHY dogs do what they do, beginning with the whelping of the pups. The author trained dogs in a monastery for years and has many success stories to back up his methodology... No shortcuts here - just sound advise.

NOt sure why one reviewer mentions positive and negative reinforcement since Evans clearly states the need for ongoing positive reinforcement. In addition I just shelled out $150 for training which gave almost identifical recommendations regarding how to motivate your dog. I love this book. After 4 days my dog has already gotten the message and we have not yet had an accident today. I'm happy with this purchase! It appears that Evans was the "first", and probably still the best. I wish he was still publishing now!
