Product Description

The Resonance Gate System (RGS) eliminates the need for multiple pads to create different damping effects. A plastic gate attaches to the top of the pad, and can be adjusted to press the hinged damping pillow firmly against the head for maximum attack and minimum sustain. The pad comes with a large and small hinged pillow to cater to different sized drums or to gain varying levels of control.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works as advertised, may not end all resonance issues, July 30, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Evans RGS Pad Bass Drum Damper (Electronics)
I bought this product to improve the sound of the bass drum of my very cheap Fender Starcaster drum set. This drum set can not be described as anything more than a student drum set and the bass drum has a very bad resonant sound that can not be fixed by tuning it. I have tried to improve its sound by tuning the heads in all different ways, also tried taping paper towels and foam strips to the heads. Eventually I stuffed it with a pillow and that gave me the clean, clear thud I wanted, but it was too dry for my taste and I don't like how it looks either. I decided to try the Evans RGS pad and the result, when used by itself, was a significant reduction in resonance on the batter head and associated improvement in clarity and definition of the sound. It did nothing to reduce resonance problem on the resonant head and it did not completely remove all resonance on the batterhead. This was not enough for my taste and I ended up adding a pillow against the resonant head which resulted in a sound similar to what I started with, a clean, clear sound but now with some remnant resonant overtones. I still want to try some other way to damp the resonant head other than a pillow, so I may try the Evans Q pad or Moongel.

Follow up: I applied RTOM moongels (two pieces) to the resonant head and that was it! With the Evans RGS on the batter head and the Moongels on the resonant head, now I love how my bass drum sounds. I was afraid the Moongels would fall off after a while since the heads are vertical, but the Moongels have been stuck to that head for days now and have not fallen off, even with the vibrations from daily practice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sanity saver, December 1, 2004
This review is from: Evans RGS Pad Bass Drum Damper (Electronics)
I tried every tuning trick in the book attempting to get the 16x16 bass that came with my Groove Percussion Travel Kit (ASIN B0006JKC3U) to sound right.

Square bass drums (same diameter and depth) are notoriously difficult to tune, and no matter which tension setting I used, or what I stuffed inside to dampen the ring and overtones without choking the warmth I was seeking, I just cound not get there until I purchased this ingenious pad.

Careful placement using the multiple gate design of 'pillows' brought about a magic transformation from a cantankerous bass drum that seemed to have its own ideas about sound, to a sweet, warm sounding bass that does what I want it to do.
