Editorial Reviews

Review

Evasion not only challenges the assumptions of what it means to survive, but also what it means to truly live. -- Bad Subjects, December 2001

Offers beautiful stories about surviving in voluntary squalor that are human and touching, liberatory and hopeful at the same time. -- The Insurgent, October 2001

While the entire book is well written, there are moments of pure genius that arise without warning. -- Bad Subjects, December 2001

3.0 out of 5 stars Stop Talking and Just Listen a bit . . . ., February 19, 2005
By
Bob Mackie! (left lobe, center brain) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Evasion (Paperback)
If you're reading this, the 16th review, you already know what this book is about: a kid hoboing it around the country trying to enjoy life without working and still get some grub. Very inspirational.

The parts of the book where the author just stops and describes the setting, the people, and what he's doing are superb. But when he shares his perspective and thoughts on, well, anything is where he is the weakest.

I would recommend this book if the plot sounds interesting to you, its only about $6 and may definitely make you think differently about making work your first priority in life. Just ignore the author's musings.

As with any book, take what you want from it. It is no bible.

I think the real amazing thing is how this character self published his own book and it has reached this many people. LONG LIVE SELF PUBLISHING!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting experiences. Ridiculous politics., May 8, 2008
This review is from: Evasion (Paperback)
Writing a review about 3 years after reading it. Spent time with the author's crowd and even talked to him a little.

Good things: fun stories with a loose flowing conversational feel, and achieves some superficial excitement. I learned a few things in here that saved my life when broke.

Bad things: for every authentic experience there's a pseudo-rebellious observation that sounds like it comes from the worst mooch of a roommate you could ever imagine. You know the kind- rants against the man, sob stories when the rent's due, and won't do the dishes. The book sounds like it's trying really hard to justify something that's pretty lame.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life is what you do for a living... not work., September 9, 2004
By
Taylor Salad "BeatSalad" (Gig Harbor, Washington) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Evasion (Paperback)
If you get this book, you WILL read it, and you WILL think about leaving your job, and whole life behind at least one time... for about a week or so. When you walk down the sidewalk and you see some begging homeless punk kid, and think, "I wonder if that's him" and then the college kid behind you drops some change into his cup... you feel bad, he has much less money than you and he just gave what might be the author of the book you're reading money! Actually the author is the average looking college looking kid, and he is the one living off dumpsters, not that kid in rags for clothes. How does this work? America throws out alot of good stuff, why not use it for something other than land fill? Read the book, think about it, then make friends with him... I did, and by the way his name is Mack. There is no way you will not love this book, or the author.
