5.0 out of 5 stars Life is what you do for a living... not work.
If you get this book, you WILL read it, and you WILL think about leaving your job, and whole life behind at least one time... for about a week or so. When you walk down the sidewalk and you see some begging homeless punk kid, and think, "I wonder if that's him" and then the college kid behind you drops some change into his cup... you feel bad, he has much less money than...

If you're reading this, the 16th review, you already know what this book is about: a kid hoboing it around the country trying to enjoy life without working and still get some grub. Very inspirational.

The parts of the book where the author just stops and describes the setting, the people, and what he's doing are superb. But when he shares his perspective and thoughts on, well, anything is where he is the weakest.

I would recommend this book if the plot sounds interesting to you, its only about $6 and may definitely make you think differently about making work your first priority in life. Just ignore the author's musings.

As with any book, take what you want from it. It is no bible.

I think the real amazing thing is how this character self published his own book and it has reached this many people. LONG LIVE SELF PUBLISHING!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting experiences. Ridiculous politics., May 8, 2008
This review is from: Evasion (Paperback)
Writing a review about 3 years after reading it. Spent time with the author's crowd and even talked to him a little.

Good things: fun stories with a loose flowing conversational feel, and achieves some superficial excitement. I learned a few things in here that saved my life when broke.

Bad things: for every authentic experience there's a pseudo-rebellious observation that sounds like it comes from the worst mooch of a roommate you could ever imagine. You know the kind- rants against the man, sob stories when the rent's due, and won't do the dishes. The book sounds like it's trying really hard to justify something that's pretty lame.

When you walk down the sidewalk and you see some begging homeless punk kid, and think, "I wonder if that's him" and then the college kid behind you drops some change into his cup... you feel bad, he has much less money than you and he just gave what might be the author of the book you're reading money! Actually the author is the average looking college looking kid, and he is the one living off dumpsters, not that kid in rags for clothes. How does this work? America throws out alot of good stuff, why not use it for something other than land fill? Read the book, think about it, then make friends with him... I did, and by the way his name is Mack. There is no way you will not love this book, or the author.

5.0 out of 5 stars A learning experience..., November 26, 2002

Pages away from finishing this book... Great book! Can't put the thing down.
I've always wondered what it'd be like to dive thru the trash and pull out a gleaming diamond.
Well, after reading this book (and researching the local laws(I know, I know..., but I'm cautious by nature)) I tried it. I LIKED it!
There truely is NO way a person with legs to walk, arms to reach and hands to grab, could go hungry in this country(unless he's ill, lazy or too prideful). In my observations there's food everywhere. And LOTS more!
People truely are wasteful and the system perpetuates that waste, but their loss is your gain!
You never know what you'll find, but you'll find something interesting.
Despite some of the obviously illegal things the kid in this book does, it's nice to know that one can put down all his/her crud and have a "free" adventure on the bill of a wasteful "civilization".
As a survivalist, this book peaked my interests.
It has alot of valuable info that you might not use(some may be a tad dated and, in todays new age of security, improbable to impossible), but it's still nice to know, if you need it.
Even without all the info, it's still a good story.
Boy meets dumpster, finds love & freedom.
Read this book. (Or steal it, if your so inclined...)

5.0 out of 5 stars great stuff, May 7, 2003

This review is from: Evasion (Paperback)
If you are a punk kid you probably heard of the amazing zine Evasion. You know, it was the kind of zine that only a hundred copies were made but everyone who recieved one made a hundred more and on and on. Well, this book is just like the zine. In fact... its got the entire zine in it, plus another 100+ pages of crimethinc. adventure.

Personally id recommend Crimethinc's other book over this one, but Evasion is definitly worth reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surreal Look At The American Underground, May 5, 2005

Okay - this is one of the best books I've real in the last 5 years. Although I disagree with alot of the author's personal tenets (shoplifting, minor fraud) I do agree that the world is a landscape/playground, and that the corporate octopus has truly enslaved us all and made us soft.

This is written in journal style - one can imagine the author scribbling down his thoughts in front of some coffee house. His frank style is absent in current literature and gives authenticity to his prose. "Unknown" goes to great pains to put out his philosophy, while keeping his adventures in chronological order.

Best story: his travels to Milwaukee and the metal fest. I can just imagine him sneaking in to a place he would normally never go.

GREAT read. Pick this up!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, May 23, 2008
By
This review is from: Evasion (Paperback)
I wish the Evasion kid went more into detail on certain things. I don't think that he was very clear on why exactly he was vegan, why he became homeless, why he did anything at all. It was just "free" but I wanted to understand his ideas a bit better, I suppose. If he has ideas, I mean.

He reminds me of some of my friends. I started working an "under the table" job and I'm not "selling out" or giving into "the man" I'm just making money. And it's annoying when I've worked my [...] off then I have moocher friends like the Evasion kid that have no problem having you pay their way. Clearly not everyone can live like this kid.

Interesting though. I'm going to have to pass it on to some friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing read, January 21, 2007
This review is from: Evasion (Paperback)
recently purchased this book from crimethinc and could not be more content with this piece of literature. This story is very compelling and gives a closer look at what society is able to throw away and what others are able to salvage from their garbage to create an interesting, adventurous lifestyle. Definately worth the price, pick this up for a good read.

This book has changed my life. It has made me open my eyes to the real world and undertsand that you do NOT have to pay for everything that you want, or need. This world that we live in is very giving, and they do not even know it. Evasion shows us this with his great zine like novel. Please, please read this book, it WILL change your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!..., June 2, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Evasion (Paperback)
This book is fantastic. It was hard for me to put it down. I serioulsly read it in about 48 hours. One of the best books yet. About a straight-edge vegan, who travels across the U.S. by jumping trains, hitch hiking, and ocassionaly riding a bus. He lives off the dumpster and stealing. Any where that this author can sleep he will. He sleeps on top of stores, in abandend cars, and once in a great moon is peoples houses. Another great book by Crimethinc.
