5.0 out of 5 stars It's a tough game July 19, 2012
I don't have much to say... I'd rather spend time playing this game. Imagine a game of chess wherein you take the king but the other guy is still playing. He comes back a year later as one of your pawns and kills your king in a sadistic and embarrassing way. Then you come back and you kill him and 5 of his buddies just because they happen to know him and your rage cannot be quenched. EvE is a very difficult game to master, but a lot of fun to play. You can get going in a few weeks, and if you know what you are doing even with minimal skills you can crush the oldest of vets. This game is about what you know, how you plan, and your execution of said plan to achieve your goals. You can take anything. Get rich and you play for free. I've been playing for free for years. If you are looking for a game that holds your hand through the fairy kingdom of gumdrops this ain't it. If you want to match wits and skills in the toughest environment available in gaming... step up. The meat grinder awaits you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Addictive - Take That For What It's Worth July 19, 2012
I've been playing EVE Online for over a year, with three active accounts at the peak. I now only have two. That's allowed on EVE, multiple accounts. The game is structured in a way that doesn't give an unfair advantage. It opens doors for players, but increases the difficulty. Unlike other MMORPGs, skilling is based on real-time and not grinding, so all players advance as time goes on.

There's no single "best armor set", no "best spec" for a class. In fact, there really aren't classes. There are a progression of skills that you can choose to make your character better in the direction you want, but you can't POSSIBLY put any single character on the path to learn them all. Hence the multiple accounts being a common, and positive, aspect of the game.

This game is addictive. I keep playing it even when sometimes the action slows down a bit. That is the biggest strength and greatest downfall of this game. You have an immense sense of investment in your characters and it's hard to let that fall to the wayside. Sometimes it feels like a good job. One that you HAVE to get up and go to every morning, but one you'd miss if you didn't have that burden.

I'd suggest anybody with even a vague interest to try the game for a month or two. You get a good feel for the game with the free trial, but you don't begin investing in the game-changing skills until you've activated and the trial restrictions are lifted. It's then you begin to start a path for your character, to make them stand out as a specialist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep, amazing MMO July 19, 2012
The game can be daunting at first but the basics come easily after a few minutes. There's a lot to learn and a lot of possible paths to take. You can be literally anything you want in this nonlinear open sandbox MMO. PvPer, Explorer, PvE, Pirate, Miner, Trader, Smuggler, Production etc. Try not to throw your head against the wall for the first hour and really give it a try.

And for the hardcore who can fit a few hours each day and grind for a goal, you can earn enough after maybe 1.5 months of playtime (add the game key to a 21-day trial for an initial 51 days for a huge boost to your playtime!) to afford a subscription with in-game money, and hopefully maintain a living that sustains you to play for free. The end-game is limitless, and this is by far the most rewarding online MMO in existence.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Not A Game December 19, 2012
By Idgarad
Eve Online is not a game. MMOs aren't for the most part. Eve Online is a hobby more then a game. I often use the analogy of Model Trains. The train itself is somewhat minor to the experience. For model train collectors it's about building your collection, shaping the world, adding to the sets, and most collectors are never done.

Eve Online is the same way. Approaching it as a hobby, makes it much more understandable in it's pacing and time investment. There are periods of intensity and vast periods of what for some is boring. Eve is part Fish Tank, you tend to enjoy it like a fish tank. Eve is part model train set. Eve is part chess, part cribbage, and part oil painting.

MMOs are hobbies, not games. Games have a starting state, victory and defeat conditions, and an end. MMOs lack those characteristics. Entertaining, sure. But so is TV, books, and music. None of which are games.

In Eve Online, your character is the train and watching your collection of skills and resources grow over time is the same joy you would get adding a new gas station to your train set, or putting in a bubbling chest in your aquarium. You can literally spend 10 years playing and still not have all the skills trained (In fact is takes about 147 years to do that.)

This is not a game for people wanting instant gratification. This is a game for people who have the patience and understand the joy of say, rebuilding and restoring a car. It isn't about the destination, it's the journey.

As far as I know, 90% of people that try Eve Online quit in the first 90 days. Most won't start running level 4 missions solo until after 128 days. To fly a Tech-3 Strategic Cruiser properly takes 279 days.
