A great book on a quite unknown artist, August 9, 2005
This review is from: Evelyn de Morgan: Oil paintings (Paperback)
The book covers the life, works and art of Evelyn Pickering De Morgan, a Pre-Raphaelite woman artist who, shamefully, is not widely known to the public. The book qualifies as a catalogue of almost all of De Morgan's paintings.
The book contents are:
- Preface, by Catherine Gordon.
- Chronology
- Provisional catalogue and chronology of oil paintings (some include a brief comment related to the painting)
- Works exhibited during Evelyn De Morgan's lifetime (list)
- Evelyn De Morgan and spiritualism, by Judy Oberhausen (very informative review)
- Evelyn De Morgan's use of literary sources in her paintings, by Patricia Yates (detailed text providing insight to De Morgan's choice of subject for her paintings)
- A horror of war, by Judy Oberhausen
- Bibliography
- Plates (70 colour plates, 7 black&white plates. All printed in glossy paper of excellent quality).
Texts (95 pages) are good, and plates (all 77 plates, in 77 pages) excellent.
