Book Description

September 1, 2010

The Dog Chapel introduced readers to Stephen Huneck’s very special retreat for dogs and their owners, and Huneck’s dog-centric philosophy captured the public’s attention. In this book, a follow-up to that perennial seller, readers will learn more about the special affection owners reserve for dogs that have passed on.

Pet owners come to the Dog Chapel in Vermont to remember and memorialize their beloved dogs. All along the walls and on every available surface, visitors leave pictures, letters, and testimonials about the dogs that have passed away. People who have just lost a pet find comfort in this outpouring of emotion, and use the walls to bid farewell to their canine friends. This book celebrates this affection and reflects on the life cycle of beloved dogs. It is the perfect gift for a bereaved pet owner, or anyone who believes that dogs have a special place in human life.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 2 Up–After recovering from a near-fatal illness, Huneck established a chapel dedicated to the relationship between dogs and their owners on his property in Vermont. He originally wrote about it in The Dog Chapel: Welcome All Creeds, All Breeds. No Dogmas Allowed (Abrams, 2002). He begins this book with an update about the chapel 10 years after its foundation. The introduction is lengthy–six pages of fairly small print–but touching. It is illustrated with color photographs of the small chapel, its walls covered with notes and photos from dog lovers who visited or were influenced by Huneck's work. Following the introduction, the artist presents about 30 short sayings about dogs, one per spread, in large informal print and illustrates each one with his characteristic style. The sayings are clever and celebrate the richness that pets bring to life. They also offer comfort for those who might have lost a beloved canine friend. The illustrations are simple and solid, but brightly colored and have a gentle humor of their own. This book is a fitting remembrance of Huneck, who recently passed away, and a good choice for those who may be dealing with their own loss.–Donna Cardon, Provo City Library, UTα(c) Copyright 2010. 5.0 out of 5 stars Adorable and just what I needed, September 11, 2010
This review is from: Even Bad Dogs Go to Heaven: More from the Dog Chapel (Hardcover)
If you've ever had the pleasure of having a "bad dog," then you know how at ease I felt when I saw the newest title of Stephen Huneck's latest book. I've gifted the first Dog Chapel book to many of my friends who have lost their doggy members of their families. The first Chapel book has brought much closure to me and my friends over the years, and when I saw "More from the Dog Chapel," I had to get a few copies right away. I absolutely love this new cover and the new art is as amazing as it is touching. I recommend this book as a condolence gift or just to leave on your coffee table as a conversation piece. Stephen Huneck's humor and genius will be missed. If he believed that "bad dogs" go to heaven, then I'm certainly a relieved believer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming, entertaining...will put a smile on your face!, July 26, 2010
This review is from: Even Bad Dogs Go to Heaven: More from the Dog Chapel (Hardcover)
What a wonderful, entertaining and charming book! "Even Bad Dogs Go To Heaven" has a really "eye catching" and wonderful cover featuring a Golden Retriever and inside features some really beautiful pictures of Dog Mountain in Vermont and the dog parties held there each year followed by classic Huneck artwork, whimsical drawings w/ witty captions that will make you smile, if not laugh out loud. Love it and would recommend it for children and adults and a great book to give as a gift. Enjoy it, I certainly did!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Touching, Funny and Profound, September 9, 2010

This review is from: Even Bad Dogs Go to Heaven: More from the Dog Chapel (Hardcover)
I am a big fan of Stephen Huneck's book "The Dog Chapel." I loved both the wonderful woodcut illustrations and Huneck's sense of humor, his understanding of how deep the dog and human bond is and his advice on how to deal with the tragic loss of the four legged members of our family. This sequel to "The Dog Chapel" lives up to the first. Again, it made me laugh and tear up as the book goes through the life cycle of our canine companions. I also enjoyed all the color photographs of Dog Mountain and the actual Dog Chapel. The place looks amazing! The Chapel is covered floor to ceiling with photos of dogs loved and lost. It is nice to see how many people love their dogs as much as I do. I hope I can visit in person someday. I was very saddened to read in the forward that artist and author Stephen Huneck passed away shortly after he completed this book. I hope they can keep the Dog Chapel going so I can make the trip.
