An American Classic, April 28, 2009
This review is from: Even the Blues (Audio CD)
A confident, well-crafted, clever offering from Boston's legendary Kickbacks...
From the opening chorus of "Figure You Out" (good luck getting it out of your head!), it's obvious that singer/songwriter Tad Overbaugh drank heartily from the trough of early nineties punk pop, distilling its irresistable appeal into a smarter, crisper, more mature sound. There is no musical excess or melodromatic baggage here, just great songwriting, superb musicianship, and straightforward lyrics deftly and convincingly delivered by Overbaugh's potent voice. While in the same vein as The Replacements and The Gin Blossoms, The Kickbacks absolutely defy categorization simply because nobody is writing songs like this anymore.
"Going Out to Get Home" "Figure You Out", and the title track are standouts, but the album is solid all the way through. Buy this if you need your spirits lifted, have a long drive ahead of you, or simply need to restore your faith in the future of American music.
