4.0 out of 5 stars Hard to Pronounce, Easy on the Ears April 21, 2005
Format:Audio CD
"She sho'll smiling hard. Where is this here place?" my Granny asked, looking at Goapele's CD cover. Then she tried to pronounce the name: "Goh- Peel? Where the hell's that?" I had to laugh; when I first saw the flyer, I too imagined it to be some mystical tourist mecca somewhere near Jamaica where women that look like the one on the cover sit on pristine shores eating mangoes in slow motion and getting you in trouble with your other half because you can't help but to look, then I figured it to be a mix CD of dancehall music.

I pronounced the name: "Gwah-pelay, Granny. It's Gwah-pelay. She's an artist I'm reviewing." "Hmmh," Granny snorted, "sound like a damn Jamaican fruit. You and your damn nappy dreadlock friends..." Goapele came to me from a friend who knows my love for music and how I can be as much of hard-ass as my Granny when critiquing things.

So here goes my first underground review: Goapele is a west coast artist (likely to be pegged neo-soul) looking to make a name for herself. As underground as she may be, somebody damn sure believes in her; "Closer", the first song, is to be featured on the soundtrack of the new movie "Honey."

Goapele's voice has a bird-like warmth that reminds you of Amel Larrieux. "Closer" is seductive and obvious as to why someone would have it in a movie. It's only weakness in fact is a keyboard that sounds cheap and Radio Shack-ish, making the cut only a step above demo.

It isn't until "Got it" that the album begins to shake of its sluggish, demo status. Here, the fruit of the Cali neo soul scene samples some serious, crip-walkable west coast funk. Although the arrangement is slight on some bass, Goapele's lead and background vocals and command of the track is fairly on target for such a sonic piece.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Can't Stop Listening February 10, 2003
Format:Audio CD
I used to be a music editor and I'm a musician myself, so I think I have a pretty discerning ear. I saw this lovely South African sistah featured in Vibe's Next section. I decided to check her out because she had a cool look and she came correct in the interview. But I was not prepared for what I heard coming out of my speakers! Baby girl is phenomenal. She weaves melodies and moods singularly. Her voice is as thick and smooth as Grandma's gravy! Calling her neo-soul just puts her in a box that's already too full of soulster wannabes. She's beyond that. Sister Goapele is the real thing. When I heard her voice,it sounded familiar and come to find out, I have her doing spoken word on an underground CD from 1999. You've got to cop this album. It's well worth the paper! I put it in my player and I haven't stopped listening! I can't. My faves: Closer, Catch 22, and Butterflykisses. Every song is worth it. Do your thing sis, do your thing...

4.0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing.... May 2, 2005
Format:Audio CD
I received this cd as a gift from a good friend of mine. I remember hearing Closer on the local radio station and was really feeling the message of the song. But for some reason never made an attempt to purchase the cd or find out more about the artist. It was not until my good friend brought 2 copies and gave me one that I began my love affair with Miss Goapele's music.

I enjoyed this cd from the begining to the end...songs like Closer, Too Much The Same, Catch 22 and It Takes More, give you the strenght to get over that relationship that went sour and Butterfly kisses restores the faith that you can love again....

Although Goapele may not recieve the media attention of other artist she is a star in her own right.

Excellent, I can't wait for her 2nd cd....

5.0 out of 5 stars REAL R&B January 7, 2006
By Cece
Format:Audio CD
The first time I heard Goapele was when my boyfriend was playing her song on the radio. There I was driving in my car with a full bright moon in front of my window and I heard "Closer." My jaw dropped. I never heard anything so pure in my life, I called up the radio station and I asked him "What song is that? Whos it by?" I was going estatic. Thats when he told me about the album and I knew I had to listen to the whole thing. Track after track of wonderful would-be hit songs. She takes poetry and spits it back at you with translucent love songs. Outstanding coming from an underground artist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wow.. March 1, 2003
Format:Audio CD
Goapele has one of those extremely addicting voices. She could sing Mary Had a Little Lamb, and one would be intrigued. While her chops aren't the best in the business, they're definetely the most mesmerizing. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's something about her voice that makes you want to listen to it over and over again. If you don't believe me, go to [website]. You can listen to samples of the entire CD before you purchase it. Just listening to her on her website made me yearn for more Goapele. I'm sure this lady is amazing live. The songs are perfect for her voice and the lyrics are a bit thought provoking. The songs, however, are never preachy, they'll just cause you to think a bit. She gets 4 stars instead of 5 because the production is not too great and because I think the addition of the guest rappers (2 songs) is unnecessary. She really could have carried the songs on her own. "Even Closer" is a nice CD that'll give you a good vibe and have you singing Goapele's songs in the shower!

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice try but big miss.
I like her voice. I like the choice of genres here. But her vocal range is completely limited and many of her songs are SO laidback that they don't really get to take off. Read more

I first heard of Goapele back 2004 but never caught on to her music. A rapper remixed her song "closer" and I always loved the hook not knowing it was her song. Read more
