5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it
Ever since Men in Kilts (and if you haven't read it, you haven't lived), I've had a huge crush on Katie MacAlister. Her characters are funny, strong, believable, and get in some of the most ridiculous situations. This book follows the same tradition, and I liked it more than most of her other Dark Ones/Vampire stories. There was a little bit of darkness in this, but so...

I'm a little dissapointed & I'll tell you why. I've come to expect great things from Katie Mac- no let me rephrase- I've come to expect fantasticly huge, gigantic surprises and fun from Katie Mac. She is one of my all time favorite authors AND one of the authors that I consider paves the way for eveyone else to follow in the paranormal romance genre. Even in her romance where there is no paranormal she kicks major butt and I fall in love with her leading characters despite myself. I've always been pleasurably surprised...until now.

Don't get me wrong this story was alright, I guess. But for a few bright exeptions (yes the Butterfly World scene cheif among them) this book just didn't dazzle me with Katie Mac's usual spark of brilliance. Deep sigh. Let's hope the next Aishling Gray in Mac's series holds up.

If your still interested in the book...Paen Scott, a Scottish Lord ( who doesn't speak like a scottsman but rather an Englishman, big difference), has a lesser demon visit to tell him dear old dad, who has trod off to the forests of Bolivia, forgot to mention something. He promised to give a demon lord a statue of the monkey god or forfeit Paen's mothers soul. Obviousley Paen is distressed, especially when he finds out he only has 5 days now to turn over the statue & by the way it's nowhere to be found.

Paen turns to a half sun elf/diviner named Sam, who has just opened her detective business to hunt missing objects down. She & her lingerie model/fairy cousin are on the case. However they kind of seem to be miserably bad detectives and they also end up doing nearly every sterotypical thing they shouldn't due. Noelle from early Dark One books shows up to help interrogate a 6 armed poltergeist named Rueben & some kilt clad ghosts wander around a bit.

I had a problem with liking the main charachter, Paen, other than his accent or lack there of. He goes out in noon day sun. Hmmm, ok, let me see...oh, yeah, HE'S a DARK ONE!!! AKA vampire. Sure Christian in Mac's other books in the series could tolerate being covered up & out in the last rays of the day, but not at noon! And all the action takes place over 5 days but 2 of those are skipped through since the couple are in different cities! I just don't feel happy about this one.It lacks the best aspects of the series.

This book follows the same tradition, and I liked it more than most of her other Dark Ones/Vampire stories. There was a little bit of darkness in this, but so much quirky fun that I never got too scared. I felt like this was a more substantial story, and I loved Paen and his hilarious half sun elf soul mate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantasy Romance, May 14, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Katie Macalister has given us another zany, outrageous, romantic romp. If you read her you know what to expect from her novels, a mixture of zany characters, outrageous situations, and a great romance. Mostly Fun Fun Fun! And this one does not let us down, I loved the attack of the killer butterflys, the self denying fairy, the cute monkey, and abunch of scottish ghosts, who want a real chance to swing a sword. Not to mention our heroine, a half-elf investigator and a Dark One, (vampire).

Samantha Cosse is now an investigator, the half-elf has left diviners school and opened an agency with her cousin Clair, a fairy, Who thinks she is human. She works as a lingure model.

Paen is a Dark One, a vampire, without a soul. Only finding his Beloved can get him a soul. However he thinks he is fine and doesn't see the need to tie himself to a woman he has never met. Where is the benefit to him, she gets immortality and he gets bonded to her for eternity.

SAm is hired by one person to find a lost book. Then Paen hires her to find a lost or stolen statue. Wouldn't you know it both items are on the want list of two different Gods. The action is fast and the laughs are plentiful. Sam and Paen manage to stumble from one crisis to another followed shortly by his brother Finn and Clair. For a laugh and a good time follow along with this book. I loved it. It reminded me somewhat of her Aisling Grey novels.

4.0 out of 5 stars Even Vampires Get the Blues, October 28, 2006
I won't give away what happens in the book, but I will comment on the author's writing and the book in general. Katie MacAlister uses her humor again to create and bring alive her characters; as usual this book put a smile on my face and urged me to continue to read. There were a few spots that can be winced at but all in all the book was a success and turned out to be one of my favorites. Katie MacAlister defintely has a writing style her own and it always draws me in. Even Vampires Get the Blues is a book that will be enjoyed and loved!

4.0 out of 5 stars Kudos to Katie MacAlister for the killer butterfly scene!, May 4, 2006
Katie MacAlister displays her quirky humor yet again in EVEN VAMPIRES GET THE BLUES.

Half-elf Samantha Crosse and her faery friend/lingerie model, Clare, have just opened up a private investigation agency when a mysterious client named Owen Race hires them to locate a manuscript that was stolen from him. Shortly afterwards, Dark One Paen Scott also hires them to assist him in finding a monkey statute called the Jilin.

Paen has only have five days to find the statute or a demon will take the soul of his mother. He wouldn't wish a soulless existence on anyone as he already lives without a soul; his soul can only be obtained if his Beloved is found and Paen has absolutely no use for the entire concept of a Beloved! Little does he realize but Sam is his Beloved.....

Katie MacAlister's books are always fun to read and this one was no exception! However, the book did seem to take awhile to really get going and appeared overloaded with seemingly unrelated details. Eventually all of the details were tied together, including the purpose behind Owen Race and his missing manuscript.

EVEN VAMPIRES GET THE BLUES really took off after the killer butterfly scene- one of the absolute funniest scenes ever written! This reviewer could not stop laughing as Sam literally ran from millions of butterflies. This scene contains Katie MacAlister's signature quirky humor and made the entire book worth reading. Fans of Katie MacAlister's vampire series will enjoy EVEN VAMPIRES GET THE BLUES as her books always keep the reader laughing. Kudos to Katie MacAlister for the killer butterfly scene!

4.0 out of 5 stars wild zany private investigative romantic fantasy, May 3, 2006
Moravian Dark One Paen Scott seems doomed as he is the only one of his brothers born without a soul. His only chance is to find his beloved who can bring his soul to him. However Paen has no hope in ever obtaining his soul as he does not believe in love so makes no efforts to try to find his soul mate; instead he spends his time translating ancient manuscripts.

An Alastor, Casper Green shows poof to Paen that his father, away in South America, owes the Oriens a statue of the Jiln God and they have sent him to collect. Failure to pay will cost his mother her soul. Paen hires her half-breed human elf Samantha Cosse and her cousin purebred fairy Clare, who just opened up a private investigative firm as the former is excellent at locating lost items, to locate the missing artifact. Attracted to one another, she takes on another case to find her beloved's missing soul.

EVEN VAMPIRES GET THE BLUES is a wild zany private investigative romantic fantasy in which the three elements blend smoothly together leading to readers having e a great time perusing this book. The story line is part humor yet builds suspense as fans ponder if Sam can save her soul mate, who refuses to recognize who she is, and his mother. As with SEX, LIES, AND VAMPIRES and SEX AND THE SINGLE VAMPIRE, Katie MacAlister provides a frenzied fun frolic.

3.0 out of 5 stars Starts out great, but loses the plot half-way through, September 9, 2006
Paen Scott is a vampire without a soul. Half-elf Sam is his beloved and she can restore his soul to him. The only problem is Paen doesn't want his soul restored and doesn't want a beloved.

The story starts out really great with some very engaging characters. The romance between Paen and Sam is great. Unfortunately, once Sam restores Paen's soul the story starts to go downhill.

First Sam, trades the immortality she gained from becoming Paen's beloved, then she's almost killed and Paen has to change her into a vampire, only she loses her soul. There's also the plot of two demons vying for a monkey statue.

By the end the story becomes so farfetched that is loses all its charm. I think if they had stuck with Paen not wanting to love someone and Sam bringing him around, it would have been better. Or if Paen was willing to sacrifice himself to save her it restored her soul.

Near the end, the Sam character becomes completely annoying. It's too bad, because the first half of the book is great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Paranormal Quirky Humor, May 12, 2006
This was a fun read. The story was a little slow to get started and characters scattered but the author brought them together in her usual expert fashion. Katie thank-you for the great stories you do. This one is a mystery, adventure and a ablsolute HOOT. Readers do want a sexy moody vampire as the star of a story which you have given us, but than to put him in your crazy universe was fun. I loved the killer butterflies. Also the flower munching fairy(excuse me, model) as a supporting character was fun. Are we going to hear more about the vampire brothers? Will this family conect with others ? Katie please bring us more.

5.0 out of 5 stars different twist, May 14, 2008
yes there are spoilers so don't read till after you've read the book

Out of the Dark Ones books, I like this one the most. Primarily because it took a different take on the whole bond between a dark one and his beloved. It was the whole, 'what if a dark one doesn't want his beloved?'

I can only imagine living for as long as a dark one is famed to live, and in Paen's particular case, 260 some odd years, and not having yet found my one true love. I would imagine that I would've more than likely given up hope somewhere in those long years, especially given the very sad nature of the dark ones being wells of extreme sadness, pain, and anguish. I would imagine that one day, I'd put forth an effort to squash that part of me that longs for my beloved and try to be complete in myself.

So when it finally does happen for Paen, it's not really a shocker that he's in utter disbelief and denial after spending so many years breaking down the special bond to it's most clinical of definitions of 'a dark one literally can't exist without his beloved since he can't feed off anyone else'.

Is it excusable of how he treats Sam? Heck no. I've had guys treat me the exact same way and worse, so in reading that part where Paen lays it all out in how he feels, it felt personal for me. It reminded me of my more stupid and naive moments in life. But in saying that, I think that it's important that an author puts such 'human' moments in their writing so that the readers can either sympathize or empathize with the characters. So for people to say that Paen's an *** for acting the way he does, and Sam's dumb for acting the way she does, those reader's need to realize that there are literally people out there in the world that would react the same exact way.

I think the only thing I wasn't too crazy about was the fact that couldn't figure it out sooner that the statues were one in the same.

Overall, if it hasn't been obvious throughout the review, I really liked this book for it's human moments and a bit more closer to reality character reactions on the parts of Sam and Paen.

I love the fact that there's an introduction of other mystical creatures such as faeries and elves, some might find that stupid and think i'm contradicting myself, but hey these characters have assimilated to earth and the humans that live here, so they may be mystical creatures, but their emotions are reflections of their surroundings.

Anyway, if you ever read this Mrs. Macalister the book rocks in my opinion. :)

I am a little behind on my reading but I finally got to this this book.

I enjoyed the store very much. Like the other books from Katie Macalister this one was funny and fun to read. I enjoyed Paen and Sam's relationship which grows to love throughout the book.

Samantha Cosse is an investigator.

Paen is a Dark One, a vampire, without a soul.

Sam is first hired to find a manuscript then Paen hires her to find a statue that would save his mother's soul. Both Sam and Paen not knowing that the two are connected.

This book is fast paced and full of action, pain, and of course, love. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a good read.
