Kudzu Strips (1981-1991),
By AstroNerdBoy "AstroNerdBoy" (Denver, CO) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Even White Boys Get the Blues (Paperback)
This book contains selected Kudzu comic strips from the first 10 years. The center section of the book contains 16 pages of the color Sunday strips (there's also one on the back cover). The remaining pages contain the various "daily" strips that were first published in the newspaper. For those who don't know, "Kudzu" centers around a teen boy named Kudzu. Kudzu lives with Mama, and his chocolate-loving parakeet Doris. Also in this strip are the ever-patient "token" black character (and Kudzu's best friend) Maurice, the "terminal" white boy Nasal, the town's teen-temptress Veranda, and the town's ugly girl Ida. The strip is a southern strip and told from a southern point of view. Those living in the south (or who have lived in the south) will have the greatest appreciation of this strip and book.

The "New South" - a cartoon!,
By WFK "alt historian" (Wolfsberg, Austria) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Even White Boys Get the Blues (Paperback)
When I travel I try to find a cartoon that gives me insight into the mood of the country I am in. For example I consider "Doonesbury" typical American, but I didn't know that there are regional strips too. So I was very pleased when I found this book in a small bookshop in Port Beaufort, SC. This is it - the South: a cartoon. Especially The Rev. Will B. Dunne is a character so good he must be true. But the he is a cartoon, isn't he?
