Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Statistics show that approximately 14 million single parents in the United States are responsible for raising 21.6 million children - on an average annual salary of $28,000.

For many, the cost of a college education has become nearly unaffordable. As I visited several bookstores and libraries in search of resources to help fund my son's education, I noticed a similarity. While many of the books did, in fact, provide the information I desired (i.e., scholarship, grant and loan information) nothing focused on the entire college experience of not only the student, but the role, contribution and effect it has on the parents. More specifically, nothing focused on assisting the single parent looking to provide an education for their child on a meager salary of which federal government oftentimes considers too high to qualify for educational assistance.

The parent sessions I attended at the university were undoubtedly informative, and I honestly thought that I was on top of things, which, in retrospect, could not have been further from the truth. Disappointed in the lack of resources available regarding the subject of financial aid for college and, specifically, information related to how a single parent survives both financially and emotionally, I offer this book to the parent who has no idea where to begin or how to proceed in sending their child to college on an annual salary of $50,000 or less. It is my hope that in reading Even on Your Salary, you store its contents, not as a gospel of sort, but as a reference in contributing to the future of your prospective college graduate.

5.0 out of 5 stars College Resources, March 3, 2008
This review is from: Even on Your Salary: The Single Parent's Guide to Providing for College (Paperback)
I was looking for a book that was informative and concise. It's not overwhelming and is a very easy read. This book gives you an overview for preparing both the parent and the child for their college years and beyond. Not only is it a good reference guide for the parent, but also for the student. It has everything you need to get started. Let your child read this book also! Very, very helpful!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book, August 12, 2008

This review is from: Even on Your Salary: The Single Parent's Guide to Providing for College (Paperback)
This book is very un-complicated, informative, enjoyable and an easy book to read. I like that the author's personal experiences are relatable. I love that the author has a chapter that speaks on possible temporary set backs along with her recommendations. I also love the author's honest and subtle suggestions as to how to respond to your child's inevitable whining on the subject of money or lack thereof. This book covered everything for me. After reading it (in about 90 minutes) I was so motivated that I started revising my budget to begin saving for college for my 13 year old twin girls and my girls and I are having conversations regularly about college now. I really feel that sending them to college is something that I can really do! Thanks Ms. Travick!

5.0 out of 5 stars even on your salary is a great read for parents, July 21, 2008
This review is from: Even on Your Salary: The Single Parent's Guide to Providing for College (Paperback)
I read this book with great ease. It gives you the basics so you can design your own plan of action. The author is a loving single-mom who gives a lot to her son based on the reading. I learned a lot and the rest I knew but forgot. Therefore this is a really good reference book for when my 16 year old gets to her senior year next year I'll have a nifty point of reference to re-read. It's well worth the money to buy this book considering how much $$$ you'll save long term as a result. Kudos!
