A wonderful evening with the Philharmonic,

You're not supposed to laugh at a classical music concert. That's an unspoken rule. But when Danny Kaye came to Avery Fisher Hall in 1981 as a guest conductor with the New York Philharmonic, you just couldn't do anything else.As Kaye himself said during the performance, he can't read a note of music. But that didn't prevent him from appreciating it, and from contributing heavily to various orchestras across the country to keep classical music alive in this modern-day world. As a sort of tribute to his efforts, and to help raise money for the New York Philharmonic, Kaye was invited to be guest conductor for one evening at Avery Fisher Hall. It was a night that will live forever. The pieces themselves were played completely straight, but the moments in between were absolutely hilarious - Kaye walking to the podium at the start of the concert with what looked like 100 batons in his hand; the concertmaster "goofing" up a piece and the "argument" that followed; Kaye conducting Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee" with a flyswatter. There are too many other moments to relate here, but to anyone who loves Danny Kaye this is a worthy addition to your library.

A dazzling display of Danny Kaye's inimitable wit and style!I laughed so hard, I could barely breathe! Ladies, don't wear mascara when you watch this film! And, if you're a baby-boomer, please be sure to empty your bladder before sitting down to watch this! Timeless, hilarious, enthralling! Enjoy! Rina Deych

Don't let the price these go for deter you. I've had this on my wish list for years thinking I didn't want to pay seventy bucks for a video. Finally someone offered it for thirty bucks and I picked it up. I laughed so hard and smiled so much that at the end of the hour and a half my face hurt. If I'd realized it was so good I would have willingly shelled out a hundred bucks for it three years ago.Don't wait!

It's hard to believe, but it's 30 years and a few days since this memorable evening took place at the Lincoln Center in New York. If you like classical music, then you will love this tape. If you like the wit and humor of Danny Kaye, you will play this tape over and over again. I simply cannot understand why this wonderful piece is not on DVD - which would contribute even more than the evening itself, to the pension funds for the N.Y. Philharmonic musicians. You can catch a glimpse or two from this evening at Youtube, but the sound and picture quality is, of course, an insult to mr Kaye and the orchestra. Go get the Real Thing - NOW!!

DVD Please,
This review is from: An Evening With Danny Kaye [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I saw this many years ago, and bought it for the USAF library I managed in England. Couldn't keep the tape on the shelf; borrowers wore it out & I had to replace it. Please Paramount (or whoever owns the rights), produce this masterpiece as a DVD. It deserves much wider exposure and appreciation.

A Great Concert for the Whole Family,

I own a Laser Disc version of this concert. It was produced by EMI-Toshiba and I purchased it in Tokyo in late 80's. Both of its image and sound are in relatively high quality. The concert itself was truly entertaining from the very beginning throughout its end, and at times even touching. For years, it keeps offering a lot of laughs and tears to my family and myself. It is good for everyone in the whole family and friends, no matter whether he/she likes classic music or not. It remains as one of the top discs that are always loved by all of us. For those who never had a chance to see this concert, I highly recommend you should try to get it! We also keep searching for a new format of this concert, either DVD or BD.
