A Certain Slant of Light, February 8, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: An Evening with Emily Dickinson [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a two-video set, but each video is fairly short -- under an hour each, I'd guess. Part 1 is a fairly strange "recreation" of a meeting between Emily (Claire Bloom), her sister, and two of her friends, in which the "conversation" consists of recited poems and quotes from her letters, used to illustrate her major themes (nature, death, etc.) It was interesting from the POV of a dedicated Emily fan, but might not be able to hold the attention of the casual reader or student. Part 2 is a more typical biography, narrated by Julie Harris and very well done. It's also titled "A Certain Slant of Light" and dated in the late 70s, so I'm guessing it's a repackaging of the video by the same name that Amazon has as a special order. I'd rate Part 1 with three stars, but Part 2 as five; it's well worth watching. Not sure it's worth buying, though, unless you're a teacher, library, or video store.
