An exquisite little gem,

This review is from: An Evening at the Club (Paperback)
In about 48 hours of narrative time and 133 pages of readers' time, Gailly moves a late middle-aged man from ten years of conscientious care for heating and cooling systems, subriety and marital fidelity into the life he left behind (jazz performer, alcoholic)with a new love and a new relationship to himself as a performer. The transformation is narrated by his friend, a painter from a perspective some time after the event. Gailly hits precisely the right notes to make the story believable, to show the psychological states of the characters that make the transformation happen. In short, this novel is a mesmerizing treasure.
