In a kingdom, far, far, away....., May 19, 2004
This review is from: Ever After/Never Been Kissed (DVD)
For those who enjoy a good laugh mixed with a generous dose of romance, these movies will surely appeal to you. This is Drew Barrymore at her best in "Ever After", a Cinderella twist done with all the enchantment of the Rennasaince. Barrymore plays Danielle, a strong yet sweet girl, beloved of her father (played by Jeroen Krabbe) and hated by her stepmother the Baroness Rodmilla De Ghent (suberb role by Angelica Houston) and her stepsister Marguerithe. Contrary to the original tale the other stepsister,Jacqueline, instead of being as wicked, is belittled by her mother and sister for being overweight, thus she takes Danielle's side when the time comes to get Prince Charming back (or in this case, Prince Henry). The same could apply to "Never Been Kissed", although this time Prince Charming comes in the form of Michael Vartan (Alias). This is the tale of a journalist who, in search for a great story so she could prove once and for all that she has talent, enrolls in her old high school as a part of the research. Beloved of the Math Club and hated by the A-Popular Girls, Josie "Grossy" Geller has to put her fears aside in order to succeed. But she does not count on Sam Coulson (played by Vartan), the cute literature teacher that will make her feel whata real kiss is all about. Again, you want fun, a good laugh, and yes, a good cry, these movies are one of the best choices.

Drew's a good actress and both movies are romantic and funny, June 24, 2010
This review is from: Ever After/Never Been Kissed (DVD)
I watched both of these movies and thought they were good. I like Drew's acting. Especially in "ever after" she's a good actress. She's better at doing fairy tale roles and romantic ones then serious ones like in "Riding in Cars with Boys" where she has to be serious. She's not very good but in these movies she's good at being comedic and funny and has a charm to her that most actresses find hard to get out. "Ever After" is a really good movie about a young girl in France during the 1770s who makes her dreams come true by believing in herself and with wisdom and courage, finding out who she truly is. I liked her acting, especially towards the end. She was really good. She found a mixture of somewhere in between which she is actually good at. She shines, regal and rules. She's like a princess anyway because she's so beautiful and effortless and attractive. I love that movie. Then the other one, "Never been Kissed" is okay. It has good moments, but it is also full of embarassing moments and moments where they try to be funny, but it backfires and it's just yuck instead. I don't like those parts of that movie. It's not well-done. Drew's good in it, she's fun and spunky and romantic I guess and she makes a good match to the school teacher, who has no clue she's near his age and pretending. I thought it was okay, but not perfect. She looks like she has PMS on the cover of the film anyway. It does have good moments, like her brother showing up and pretending to be a high school student. That's funny and cute. In the end though, she reveals her secret about who she is and her brother's. The only reason they like her and because she's popular is because her brother showed up and made her that way. She finds out how fakey high school is and remembers her own awkward youth. Anyway both movies are fine and cute and maybe you'll learn something from them. They're a good match, especially for Drew's fans. Check them out!
