5.0 out of 5 stars Ever dream of me, December 9, 2010

This review is from: Ever Dream (Audio CD)
"Ever Dream" is the first single from Nightwish's fourth studio album, Century Child. It marks a unique shift for that band: the addition of male vocals from new bassist Marco Hietala, the use of a full, powerful orchestra, the gradual loss of the opera edge on singer Tarja Turunen's voice and a slightly less "operatic" approach. The song "Ever Dream" is still performed by the band in concerts today and is considered to be one of their most popular songs ever (and, in my opinion, one of the best). It was the song that new vocalist Anette Olzon used to audition for the band, and she has stated that it's one of her favorite Nightwish songs.

This single includes the amazing song "Ever Dream," in an all its epic, symphonic goodness. The song starts out with Tarja singing to a simple piano, before some violins come in, and the rest of the band and symphonic join in, growing the song into an amazingly dramatic and powerful song.

On the flip side, this single also includes Century Child album track "The Phantom of the Opera," an epic metal cover of the title song from the classic Andrew Lloyd Weber musical. Here, Tarja is in full-on opera mode, as opposed to "Ever Dream," and new bassist Marco adds some unique vocals to the song, perhaps in the most well-known Tarja/Marco Nightwish duet.

Then there's "The Wayfarer," a song that seems to hearken back to the earlier sound of the band, almost back to Oceanborn (with less opera). Just the combination of keyboards and guitar give it that more "classic" Nightwish song. It does seem a little odd on here, especially with a lack of the symphonic aspect. Still, has some epic guitar riffs.
