evocative music that grows on you,
This review is from: Ever Wanted (Audio CD)
I was in San Francisco a few months back and caught a Blanket show. The live performance was tight and I picked up a copy of Ever Wanted. Although its only 5 songs long, its packed with great songs. The first two, Ever Wanted and Never Said Goodbye are really strong and seem to get better with every listening. You can really hear the Bob Mould/Guided By Voices influences. If you package this EP with their earlier self-titled EP, you've got one of the better full-length indie albums to come out of the Bay Area in a while. Unwinding off that earlier EP is definitely one of my favorite songs, with an emo chorus that blows you away. If these guys get picked up by a major label (which should be soon if there's any justice) and get some money to make a full length CD, the results would really be impressive.

Blanket is destined to become one of the great unsung bands of our time. I'm not saying this because I'm old friends with the founder, bass player and lead singer, Derek Sikkelee. I'm saying this because despite beautiful and evocative songs, years of playing great shows and opening for some of the best in alt rock, Blanket continues to be unknown by millions who would appreciate their music. The trick of Blanket is that they sound rough and unpolished, when in reality the songs are painstakingly crafted, recorded and mixed. No note goes unnoticed in the production process. As Sikkelee warns in "Unwinding," "I run until I drop."
When I need to be inspired I put on either Ever Wanted or the self-titled Blanket EP. Derek Sikkelee and his band never fail to deliver. Don't let them down, get yourself some Blanket and enter the world of dark driving dreampop.
